308 bullets at 1000 yards for PR competition

Try 185g Berger BT (now called Juggernaught). Something like 42 g of Varget will work just fine. Used it out of my TRG 20" and it worked real nice. Use the same combo out of my PGW Coyote only this week and shot in the .3's at 400y ( don't worry - it will get you to1000.)

Now for some advice: I know 20" tubes will get it done but it will be an easier road with a longer barrel.

Yep, it does. More velocity than N550, but not the best temperature stability.

208/210 + RL-17 article here:

The article is interesting, thanks for posting. My .308 has a 28" barrel, and the lead is long enough that I can seat 210s so the boat-tail is in the shoulder of the case, and therefore takes up little powder capacity. As a result with Matrix 210 gr VLDs, which are dimensionally identical to the Berger210 VLD, I'm safely getting 2660 fps with N-550, which compares favorably with the article's 2594 from R-17 in a 26" barrel. I would expect no better performance from my rifle with a switch to R-17, although I`m now interested enough to want to try it.

It will still give you a higher maximum velocity. Whether or not it gets you to a higher accuracy node is another story...
