.308 bullets? which ones?

I have used all the above mentioned bullets and have found the most accurate bullet in .308 win hands down is the Berger 168 & 200 gr Hybrids produce the best groups .001 to .003 "

Would love to see some pictures of those groups!

I'm new to reloading .308 as well, but I'm loading for a Savage 99F and was told there is no point in trying to work up a load since the old 99s just don't have the accuracy needed to make it worthwhile. Any truth to this?

165 grain hunting bullets will kill any game you care to hunt with reasonable felt recoil. A Speer will kill any game in North American just as dead as high priced bullets. Partial to IMR4064 myself.

Hornady's are cheap and plentiful compared to everything else mentioned here. You can usually pick up a box or two from your LGS. If you want to buy bigger quantities, I would suggest Henry's Budget Shooter Supply. He also carries Berger bulets which I've had good results with. Sierra are nice but I don't see them around much, IIRC they supply the NATO round bullets now. Canadian-produced, small run bullets are also a viable option near the Berger price point, one example is Matrix bullets but I've never used them. I drooled over some nice steel tip custom Canadian bullets but I can't find the details on my desktop :-/

He also said he doesn't want to break the bank either. Although good projectiles with our tanking dollar the price is rediculous. The going price for the 168 Hybrids, $71.99 for 100 and $76.99 for the 200 Hybrid. This is from a site sponsor. Just out of principle I would not pay that much for 100 bullets unless they were made of gold even then it would be a stretch. Utter gouging.

I punch paper with the SST's and then switch to IB's for hunting... keeps the cost down.

Give the Speer Hot Cor's a try also, for an inexpensive but well made bullet.

I normally use the Hornady 150gr FMJs from Henry at Budget Shooter Supply. great service and good prices. I recently started experimenting with the Frontier Game Ranger 168gr Flat Points I purchased from marstar. I shoot these out of my .308 Mossberg MVP Patrol. It is about 10cents a bulllet cheaper than the FMJs. They shoot well but look very odd in the mag and need to slow down when chambering the round otherwise they hang up on the feed ramps. I've been getting great groups at 50 yards indoors. Waiting for better weather to take it to 200. I had to play around with the seating depth as I couldn't find any COL data for this projectile.

The most recent range outing saw 8 out of 10 round touching at 50 (center target) ignore the corner ones as other folks were trying out my rifle.

I do the same except switch to GMXs for hunting.

I do that in 7mm-08 with 139's... the difference is that SST's and IB's have virtually the same POI... GMX POI is significantly different than SST's... IME.
