308 Cal ....Rem 700 VSF or Rem 700 R5 Milspec

Didn't mean it like that... just meant the way the rifling is produced, whatever way that is. No need to go all CAPLOCK on me.

Did not mean to get you riled, sorry if you took it the wrong way.
We get customers in often who have been told by the clerks who they have purchased their 5R rifles from that Remington is using cut rifled 5R barrels from Rock Creek to build these rifles, which is entirely untrue.
The 5R barrels that Remington uses are button rifled, which is a totally different manner of installing rifling. Rock Creek barrels are cut rifling.

Still the 5r that Remington uses do seem to clean easier than the regualar button rifled barrels on the bulk of Remingtons line.
If you think the REmington 5Rs claen easily , you ought to try a real 5R barrel from Rock Creek, they ure unbelieveably easy to clean.

I can shoot 200+ rounds and patch my Rock Creek out in 3-4 patches most times. :D

Why would Remington button rifle a specific barrel for a rifle they don't advertise at all? The only rifle they advertise as having a 5R barrel is the M24, which has a forged barrel.

The best explanation I have heard for why the 5Rs even exist is that Remington has to do something with their M24 barrel overruns.

The M-24 barrel is not a stainless.

Not a chance in hell the R-5 is a M-24 rifle barrel ar it would be a 6-7 k gun vs a 1 k....

The Milspec does not even have a 40 XB trued acton 1K extra...

The Milspec is a stainless VSS 700 that someone added green to the stock to make it look cool and someone cut a barrel with the TYPE of cut that the Rock Creek boys make and called it a special gun.

It shoots about as good as every other Rem factory VSS or Police or SPS rifle I have shot.

A 40 X is not into the high 3Ks from what i gather for a reason, and I could not afford a M-24 sniper package.

Do not let the package and logo fool you!

Its no Rock creek 5 grove barrel guys.

And Rick is 100% right they are not as easy to clean, I had one it fouled quick shot better dirty but the Sweets and Kroil was used to get the copper out, and it was just not 5 mins and a few passes, it was not a terrible rifle I wont say that.

But the hype about them makes me chuckle to myself and I bought one LOL!!!

I'll look into a Rock creek when I shoot out my original barrel. By the way the over run theory seems to be the most credible. But who knows.

Here are the specs for the M24:

Calibre: 7.62x51mm NATO (.308 win)
Operation: Bolt Action
Feed: 5-Round internal magazine
Weight: 12.1 lb (5.49 kg) empty without telescope
Length: 43in (1092mm)
Sights: 10x42 Leupold Ultra M3A telescope sight (Mil-Dots),
plus detachable emergency iron sights. (Redfield Palma International)
Barrel: 416R Stainless Steel, 24" length, 1:11.2" twist, 5 radial land grooves Stock: HS Precision - adjustable length.
Max Effective Range: 800 meters (875 yards)
Expected Accuracy: 1 MOA with M118
.5 MOA with M118LR

Very similiar to my poor man's M24.
Note that the barrel is in fact Stainless steel, same length etc as the 5R.

I think they are not a bad rifle Epoxy7 I had one like I said and it shot ok.

I was not aware the M-24 barrel was Stainless, I was thinking it had the same as the M-40 on it, but it likely is and just parkerized if you can do that to stainless I dont know

I looked into it and you are in fact correct they are stainless

I got my rem700 5R to shoot haft an Inch at 100meter, they not bad, but I wouldn't say that they are better than the rem700PSS, so save you self $200 by buying the rem700PSS...

That doesn't really help much. What ammo did you use? what was your set up?

Some great input guys; thanks a big bunch! I am noticing that a number of folks are mentioning good accuracy with some of the heavier bullets (i.e. 175 SMK and the like). With a 1:11.25 twist; could it shoot 155 gr bullets with any degree of accuracy?

Gunsmoke

I'm not sure Gunsmoke. I haven't tried the 155 grain rounds in this rifle. 165 is the lightest I've gone.
One other thing about the 175, 180 grain etc accuracy loads. Often people are posting 100 yard groups with them. That often doesn't tell the whole story. I've heard of 200 yard targets with those heavier rounds being almost the same as those shot at 100 yards. ;)

Interesting point; the LTR I had would shoot almost exactly the same groups at 100 and 200 with 168gr SMK over Varget or 4895. My best group was .65ish at 200, 5 shots, and a touch under .5 at 100...

I'm not sure whether this is relevant to this thread. But, i shot a 1 " and 3/4 " at 200m with a .308 rem sps tactical last weekend using 168 gr moly coated hpbt with 42gr of varget. This rifle has a short twenty" barrel and we were suprised at the results. Next weekend we'll be going out to 500 and 600 metres. For under 800.00 out the box you can't go wrong. 100m groups don't impress me with a centre fire. I found the chamber is tight in the remingtons and had to full size the rd in the dies to make it fit.

5 shot 100 m groups do not impress me! no matter what size because I need a gun that can shoot 30 -50 shot groups under MOA

2 weeks ago I was out at 500 yards, and went 9 for 10 clay birds with a 308 that does shoot.

9 for 10 was after a 3 shot windage and elevation sighters.
