Hello all,
I looking into get a 308 remington gamemaster model number 760 I am just wondering what people think about the 308 round, and how it compairs to a 30.30 round
thanks for your time
Jamie

Hey Jamie:
The rifle you talk about is the older model, but Remington still makes a pump in 308Win. For most hunters the Remington pump guns give yoemans service, and accuracy is typically OK for hunting purposes, with some rifles giving suprisingly good account of them selves in this department.
As for the comparison between the calibers, it's like this, inside 100yds the deer wont know the difference, but out past the magical 125 to 150yd threshold the 308 takes over in both trajectory and terminal ballistics.
Have fun and if you get a chance to test drive the 760 by all means do so.

Thank you for your help,
I am new to guns, and for 300 bucks it sounded like a good buy, my win 30.30 94 is a great rifle... but I have heard people at the range saying its not good for deer outside of 50 yards. but i bought it because Its a carbine and I use small foldup tree stand, and its easy to carry. but I am trying to get a spring bear this year and people have told my that i should be looking at getting a 30-06 or 308 because a 30.03 will not penetrate a bears hide.

Don't be so hard on your 30/30. They are good out to 100yds or so and will most certainly do fine service on a bear at close range (like a tree stand) with good bullets. Whoever told you that a 30/30 would not penetrate a bears hide should be flogged with a bag of brains.

Having said that, the 760 in .308 will not disappoint you. I own two

All good advice so far on this thread. (which in itself is fairly remarkable!!!)

If the 760 is in good condition, $300 is a good price for it. The other nice thing about the 760 (as compared to your 94) is that you can put a scope on it quite easily. In general, a scope will give you advantages in low light conditions and for longer shots.

"...will not penetrate a bears hide...not good for deer outside of 50 yards..." Those people are very confused. While the .308 is more powerful than the .30-30, you won't have any trouble dropping a bear or deer with your rifle. Just be sure you have shot it enough with as many brands of ammo, using 150 to 170 grain bullets, as you can to find the one or two your rifle shoots most accurately. You'd have to do exactly the same thing with a .308 too.

OK I have a 308 in a Rem Pump Model 7600 and it is a fine rifle. I also handload and shoot a 150 sp over 41 grs of 3031 powder and this rifle gives me 1 3/4 groups (5 shots) at 200 yards. Oh ya I have it topped of with a cheapy Banner 2.5 power scope. Good shooter and great dear/bear gun.

Thanks everyone, I have a 3x9 power scope on her, and i am using 170gr win bullets. I think i am going to stick with the 30.30 this year and see how it does. As well has anyone fired or now where to buy the new Hornaby polymer tip bullets for the 30.30 tub mags?
Thanks
Jamie

Jamie:
I have yet to see any of the soft polymer ammo, in Alberta as of yet(bet I get corrected)
But my experience is that it sometimes takes a year or better to see new stuff hit Canadian shelves.(I know there are exceptions)
Heck I'm still looking for FMJ's for my 17HMR.

Your 30 30 will knock deer and blackies down religiously out to 150+ yrds as long as you do your part! If you are going to spend $300.00 because you don't think your 30 30 will kill a blackie or a deer past 50 yards, your friends (no offence) are misinformed! The .308 certainly gives you another 150 yards but the question is, can you shoot at game reliably at that distance. I have a hankering for a .308 so I I would most likely pick it up but I certainly would not feel undergunned with a 30 30 at the appropriate ranges!

Jamie,
Put me down as another fan of the .30-30 Win. I've seen deer dropped cleanly at 200 yards with an accurate rifle and good shooter.
I've seen the polymer tip ammo at the Stittsville range near Ottawa. If you are looking for some, tell people where you are.

Jaimie, Don"t know where you are, but you can give Mark or Wayne a call at Benny"s range in Stittsville , Ont. 613-836-3871 They might have the 30-30 polymer in stock now. Hornady also makes it in 35Rem ,444 Marlin, 45-70 and 450Marlin. These wont be in Canada until fall of 2006:mad:
