.308 chamber problem

I have got a Rem 5r milspec in 308 win, and while working on a new load I measured the lands at 2.966". I would like to get that down to where I can actually load near the lands, so can i just have a gun smith cut the barrel and ream the chamber to .308 again, or do I need to get a new barrel?

It is actually more labour to set an existing barrel back and re chamber than it is to fit a new blank. If you are serious about accuracy, have the action trued and a quality barrel installed with a short throat.

Other wise seat the bullets as long as you can and work your best load up... you may be surprised...
 
thanks for the reply, I kind of thought this would be the case. At least this way I can get away from the 1 in 11.25 rifling and work on a load with some heavier bullets.
 
Another option is to go with a Wyatt's Outdoor extended internal magazine box. They have one that uses the OEM follower or the single stack insert with a flat follower.
It does require a small amount of machining work to the action and bolt stop.
It will let you gain .110" of added length.
There is a Canadian supplier of the product.
 
Seating bullets out to touching or near touching the lands isn't always the answer. Try seating the bullets anywhere from .010" to .080" off the lands and you might see some amazing results.
 
Depending one what you are doing, you might find that the throat is pulling the bullet out of the case as you withdraw the bolt. Are you 100% sure that your measuring technique is right?
 
I have an aics ax on the rifle so it uses AI mags that can take 2.885". I measured it 10 times and colored the bullet with sharpie to see any scratch marks from it pulling back out and it was the same every time so I am confident my measurement is accurate. I am going to try loading them at 2.870 and see if it improves anything as before I was loading at 2.805.
