308 for bear?

BC:

It may be just me I always stick to premium bullets for big game hunts. As the extra cost per year is negligible, it is my insurance to ensure a fast kill and minimal tracking (assuming the same heart/lung shot).

I respect your experience as a guide. It is obvious that you hunt more in one year than I do in ten. One of these days I may go pro too!

dont get me wrong Dan. theres nothing wrong with premium bullets but in the end and reality I have only recovered a couple of bullets from moose/bear none from deer what I dont want to see is a missing shoulder on the opposite side of the animal thats just a tick off, and the cost of hunting, if half the guys on this board ever added up the cost and told there wives we would all be single and never hunt again lol, hell 2 new rifles in this house alone in the past 6 months, the kids remmy 270wsm and scope runs about 1400 and my new TC pro hunter and scope hits 1700 that alone out weighs any moose or elk or bear we will get this year haha....

Sorry....got to interject here....cant help it...... since when did we start questioning a friggn .308 on a black bear?? Maybe I should start a thread on ..."can a fly swatter "really" kill a fly??". C'mon, I hunt black bear with a bow and arrow at 295fps out to 40 yards. Sorry, maybe I'm an idiot but this is kinda like the 30-06 not mighty enough to kill a moose thread.

What kind of bow are you using that you have such a high velocity @ 40 yards??? What is the velocity when you let it go?? 400+ I would think, that is one hell of a bow.

Arrows tend to hold their velocity quite well at the shorter distances. I can't remember the exact number but its something like 92-95% of intial velocity at 40 yards. It's kind of surprising.

You also have to remember that with an arrow, it is essentially a flying razor blade. If you could have a bullet with the same type of cutting edges, it would probably pass through the critter so fast it wouldn't even know it's been hit.

Would a bullet like the 150gr Nosler ballistic tip be a good choice if you don't want to go to 180's in a gun like the M14?

Ballistic Tips tend to be quite a rapid expanding bullet, which may mean it expands before it penetrates adequately. Something constructed a little more robustly, like a Partition would be a better choice. It will still expand adequately, but will penetrate more deeply to ensure lethal wounds and a shorter tracking job. No pissed off wounded animals to follow up is another bonus.

well I do a little (verry little) bow hunting but the wifes cousin is a dealer and he cant seem to find us a bow that maintains its initial speed out to 40 yards :)

and balistic tips work, accubonds are a hunting bullet though I think they should all be melted down and made into tire weights they do kill animals dead

My bow chronos at 295 fps. That is measured about 4 feet after the fletching has left the rest. No need to be sinical guys, I know how it works;). Who incinuated that my arrow was still travelling at 295fps when it hit the target at 40 yards? That is certainly quite opossed to what I have stated. I am simply pointing out the specifications of my PSE and that it is effective on black bears at 40 yards. Would any one like to argue that fact?:D

no one argued you couldnt kill a bear @ 40 yards with a bow but we did call BULLS!T on the arrow not losing speed ;)

oh and didnt say darren was a know it but has a succesful taxidermy studio and archery shop ;)

CURT I dont want 1 now its a pse explains the poor IBO :)

i have got a new 308 blr, i want to use it for a bear gun.

is 308 a ok caliber for black bears? goldbridge area?

my concern is power, expansion and range.

last year when i tangled with bears using a 7mm-mag i had over penetration and no expansion. the bear i shot cried out jumped up and ran off lung shot:confused:( we got it still).

i have also purchased a 45 70 marlin guide gun. while i doubt i would have expansion issiues(and with a 45 cal entracne hole who cares;)), range, acuracy and speed of loading now concerns me the best i can get with this gun is a 2-3 inch group with every 5th shot going wild.

the blr seems a strait shooter and has a fast action with easy loading drop-in mags but i am concerned about the cartridge size. i want somthing that can reach out and drop that bear! could this blr be it?

Don't worry about your 308, it will drop a bear on its can!

the matter of fact you put a hole in lungs or heart and its DEAD it dosnt matter if its mushroomed out the size of a toonie or a hole the size of a pencil eraser its DEAD and if you lost your animal I would say you made a crappy shot ;)

Hmmmmm?:confused:For instance, if you were shooting 200 yards with a .450 Marlin,LOL.;):D:D:D

read post #31, What are you talking about "we called BULLSH!T on the arrow not loosing speed". Where did I indicate that an arrow does not loose speed? Anyways, enough of you....point is,and always has been that I've shot many a bear with the .308 and my PSE:D:slap:
