never a 308 but did take my first elk with a 30-06 loaded with 165gr Nosler Accubonds. Worked awesome. I'd use the 308 with confidence with a good bullet placed well.
WE almost always have someone in camp hunting elk with a .308. Never noticed any difference in their success vs others shooting bigger cartridges. I have personally taken a few with the .308, and have been present when over a dozen others were shot with .308s. The only caution I'd make is that standard cup and core 150's may not penetrate sufficiently if heavy bone is hit. Good quality bullets and heavier weights like 165's and 180's are very good elk medicine.
I dropped a few nice bull moose with one. It shouldn't have any problem shooting an Elk. Stick with heavier grain bullet and it should do the job just fine.
I've never used a .308 for elk either, but have taken a couple of bulls with a .30-06 which isn't much different. If I were to use a .308, I'd load heavier (180gr) premium bullets like the TSX, Partition, Accubond, etc. and be confident it would get the job done.
Haven't gotten an elk yet with my .308. But I did get a cow moose this November with. Just have to have good shot placement. If you don't get that elk in the right spot, you could end up chasing her for km's.
