I have a friend that uses a 7x57 Brno combo gun for elk. 16gauge bottom barrel just in case he finds a grouse or rabbit.

My dad carryed and used a 99F 308 for 45 years you couldn't have said it better:It all comes down to shot placement! 6 inchs below the hump.
Alot of moose went down in PG all to the 308 one shot one kill [99F,WIN 88]
On a side note i know the troops want it back they say it takes 3 223s to 1 7.62 to do the job.

Yes, a .308 will do the job just fine. I've shot a few elk and never had an issue.

Nope. Won't work. If you try, the elk will just stare at you, flip you the bird, then trot off.
