.308 Garand newb question

No, you don't need the spacer. The only save is if someone??? tries to load 30-06 in a 308 rifle it can't be done with the block in place. I don't have one and don't need it.

Use one of IMR4894, IMR4064, or H4895 in a .30-06 or .308 Garand as they generate the correct gas port pressure to cycle the rifle safely and reliably. As a bonus these are also the most accurate propellants. Stay with bullets in the 150-168gr range. Overall I have found 4064 to be just a nose ahead for accuracy in a large number of .30-06/.308 Garands and bolt rifles.

One more thing, the Garand that I bought has the adjustable gas plug. Are there any hints to setting it, or just trial and error? Has anyone tried the Norc 7.62x51 from CanAm?

If you stay with the propellants and bullet weights that I listed in my earlier post there is no need to use this gee-haw. I have fired thousands of rounds from .30-06/ 7.62 Garands using handloads within these parameters.

These aftermarket gas regulators are used when folks choose to shoot non-MILSPEC commercial ammo from their rifles. they are made by Schuster and McCann as I recall. No doubt there is info available on them on the 'net.

Again, if you are going to shoot handloads, stay with recommended bullet weights and propellants using charges within safe parameters and you are golden.

I've had good luck (accuracy and functioning) with 4064 in my Garand (3006) and M14. Usually load 165 Hornady SP's in the M1 and and 150 Hornady FMJ's in the Norinco.
Also used to load same 165's and 4064 in my 06 BAR for deer and moose. Excellant accuracy for a self loader.

You bugger - you didnt tell me you had a Garand too! Bring it out on Thursday along with the M14 and I'll do the same - got lots of ammo to play with!

I've found the Hornady 150gr to be the most accurate non-match FMJ bullet abavailable. Cheap too if you buy in bulk.
