Hey guys. Im looking to buy a .308 bolt action rifle preferably in Black! What would you guys recommend? I seem to like the Remingtons, more accurately the model 700. There is also the police version which looks awesome. What would you guys recommend that shoots nice and is fairly good price?

My advice would be to go to your local range and see what the guys are shooting there. I have gained a lot of knowledge on the firing point.
I ended up buying a donor action (Remington SPS), Gaillard barrel, and a Bell and Carlson stock. Assembled by my local gun smith.
Total cost; about 1700-1800+ scope, rings, bases and bi-pod.
Not cheep, but in my experience I have learnt to buy once/ cry once.

The guys on the forums have been saying that the SPS-V and the 700P are the samething except for the stocks. Buy the SPS-V and throw it into a nice aftermarket stock. I.E. AICS or McMillan A5. Put a Nightforce Scope and Harris Bi-Pod and you're good to go. Oh, and you have to put on a nice tactical bolt knob on it.

Suggest you narrow your criteria beyond color!
Do you want to hunt, target shoot, both?
Do you want iron sights?
Do you want a detachable mag?

This will limit your selection range...

A bolt knob, a McMillan/AICS stock or a Nightforce scope will not make any factory rifle into a tac driver. If you can live with the stock that comes with the rifle a nice new custom barrel would be the first thing to do.
However besides the "tacticool" look, nothing replaces trigger time in learning to shoot. A good coach helps too. Put about 4000-5000 rounds down your factory barrel before you decide you can out-shoot your equipment.

I think that a Tactical bolt knob would go along way to making it a tack driver, a black gun should also deliver better accuracy.

What kind of troll are you? A good knob will take inches off your group, while a McMillan/AICS stock will deliver every shot into the V. If you don't buy a Nightforce scope, well, sorry......your #### will fall off. Hey, i read all that stuff here, so it must be true.

lol!

Any heavy barrel remington 308 will do. All about personal prefence. The police will be over $1000 and SPS Varmint will be couple hundred cheaper. I think they both probably shoot the same. In the end, one might shoot 0.1 inch better, so what. Most of it is in the shooter, not the equipment.

Remington is a good place to start for a good shooting rifle ,whether it's black, walnut, blue or stainless.
There is lots of after market stuff to choose from when you want to bling it out.

Thanks for the laugh. Now I can see the error of my ways after all these years:p I should have known about that bolt knob thing. After putting one on my 40X I did win the Fall Palma a couple years ago. That must have been it, too bad I sold that rifle.

Thanks guys. I like how the Varmint is cheaper, as long as I can get it in black. It sounds knobbish but i've always wanted one in black. Sorry i should have added more info, i wud like it to have a mag if possible, i would like to put some nice glass up top and i deff want bolt action .308 cal. Im mainly looking for target practise and precision shooting but why not have it for hunting if i decide to, thanks.

Im liking the 700 SPS Stainless. Black stock with stainless barrel and black scope looks really nice. For precision shooting .308 is a good cartridge correct? What distance would I effectively be able to shoot at? Can you put a 5 round mag in the 700 sps? And is there any real benefit of a heavy barrel other than muzzle rise? Im liking stainless because of the look and aparently the quality is better than "blued" Input is appreciated, thanks.

Also I cant seem to notice the diff between varmint and non varmint 700.

What do you mean by a nice glass, mine have Bushnell elite 3200 tactical. That enough for what I am capable of doing at the moment, and believe me I do have some time behind the trigger and know a couple of thing about shooting, but doing real precision shooting whit bipod and sand bag that different.

You can have a varmint and later on switch to a better stock, the one the varmint has his horrible (I should know I have one ;) ) get the mag when you change the stock. An other reason to switch the stock, the barrel his not free floating and the stock his too cheap to efficiently do it the plastic will work depending how cold or warm it his.

And 1 more question for you at what range are you planning to shoot that rifle?

The .308 is a good inherently accurate cartridge to start with. Do you plan on handloading?? There are better cartridges out there pertaining to accuracy.....but you won't be hard done by with a .308.

A heavy barrel will help tame a bit of recoil just due to the extra weight. They also dissipate heat better than a sporter barrel. The HBs will tend to be a bit more consistant when you are doing high volume shooting. Stainless isn't always better, but in my experience with them.....they cool quicker and they clean up faster. My factory 700 HB in .222 with factory barrel will hold its own against my factory stainless LRPV in .223.

If all your'e shooting is paper, you should be able to shoot as far as 1000 yards with a basic set up. The adjustments in your scope will be your limiting factor. Tapered bases and rings with inserts will compensate any scope with a lack of adjustment.

Can't say for sure if you can get a DM for an SPS or not. Someone must be able to do a conversion if they don't come with one.

700 are just great rifles.
