i chose under 200 yards. i am competant with my .308 (its what i shoot most next to .22lr and 12ga) - but ive never shot a moose.

at 400 yards like some people are saying -- even if you have a 200 yard zero, you are going to have around a two foot drop and the bullet will have lost half its energy. i dont doubt some people here could easily make the shot, but as for me - i would just wait for a better one.

I voted 400 yards or less but only because that's the longest range you had listed in your poll.

I killed my bull moose this past fall at slightly over 200 yards with a nice clean spine shot. Dropped him in his tracks.

I killed an antlerless elk the previous fall at 500 yards. A nice clean double lung shot.

Just FYI, I use 165 grain bullets for everything and my gun is sighted in dead on at 230 yards. Anything between say, 100 yards and 300 I put the crosshairs where I want the bullet to hit and I'm +/- 4" maximum.

I spend a lot of time at the range in the summer and I probably put 100 to 200 rounds through it each summer at ranges varying from 100 to 500 yards. I have a scope with mildots and I know my gun VERY well and know the range each mildot is "dead on" at.

Just for the record, there was no wind the day I shot that elk. Had there been any serious wind (ie: enough to affect trajectory) I would have probably passed up on the shot as I'd rather not shoot than wound. I'm good at figuring in windage but at 500 yards, well, all it takes is one gust that's 5-10 mph faster than the wind was when you pulled the trigger and well............as I said, I'd rather not wound.

It really pisses me off when I see and here about hunters using small arms to hunt a big game. Moose are not like people they don't lay down or give up living that easy.I have seen a lot of moose laying dead unfound by there shooters deep in the bush shame, shame on a lot of you. Big game hunting comes with responsibility! Use the proper caliber

A .30 cal "small arms" You sure don't know much about rifles do you.

i am struggling with both.. My dad has a saying would you rather get punched buy a light weight boxer or a heavy weight. I have seen a moose shot with a 30.30 it killed it just fine the shot was 50yrds standing ,broad side. the lady drilled it right through the heart it walked into the bush about 100yrds .S0 will a 308 kill a moose yes. but 400yrds.I think we just like to brag how great a shot we are.Instead of bragging how far we shot how about how close we got to get that shot. When we bow hunt moose we try to get as close as 40yrds.

Speaking of bow hunting Mr. Knowitall. We pulled a broadhead out of the shoulderblade of the moose I killed this past fall. Another 4" towards that moose's ass end and it would have skewered his heart. But as it stands, all that bowhunter did was wound him. It was long enough ago in the past that the wound had completely healed and the bone itself was healing around the broadhead. What do you want to bet that bowhunter took his/her shot at 40 yards.....

It just goes to show, using a bow and being within 40 yards doesn't mean you're going to make a kill. You still have to be a good shot and put your bullet, arrow or crossbow bolt where it counts.

still here. Boy you guys are a tuff crowd. My sons friend got his first moose with a 308 it was a nice bull he shot at app 125yrds, i dont know what bullet they were using store bought for sure.I guess for me a .308 is a little on lite side past say 200yrds.You are right that a bigger gun shotting bigger bullet does not makes up for poor marksmanship.I started out with a 300 win mag then moved up to a 340 weatherby 250 nozzlers.7 years ago hunting moose up north we got into a turff war with 2 pissed off grizzly bears i got the first bear at 30 yrds straight on 1 shot the second bear came at my bro he shot 4 rounds straight on 2 right in the chest with the 340 the bear stumbled but did not go down it dam near ripped his arm and head off .i got to finish off the bear 3 more rounds all in the front shoulder .When the CO checked the bears out they said there were no vitals left all the rounds were kill shots. So thats why i feel a308 in the bush is on the light side . will it kill moose oh ya . the 2 shots killed the bear but it just did not know it was dead.anylesser caliber might not have taken the wind out of that bear and the bro also know as bait might not be here.still think your a tuff crowd

Well, here , mostly!!:D

How many times does a bullet skip across that?

If there where no vitals left it would not have mattered what you use the bear was working on adrenaline, 7 rounds with the 308 plcaed in the same spots would have done pretty darn close to the same amount of damage. The only thing that would have changed the outcome there would have bee a grenade launcher.

Agreed. In a situation like this, a CNS shot will be the only stopper, normal point of aim is out the window.

aug16 2003 ft saint John BC .we were up a cut block off colt creek at 7,pm .I am not sure what cns stands for can you help with that one. The bear was running on pure adrenalin the proper shot should have been in the shoulder first put him down then kill him . Bait got his first shot off at about 75yrds he missed his last 2 shots because he had his dam scope cranked up he was using a 6x24 which is great for long distance but really sucks in the bush the co report said that both his shot were with in 1 inch of each other. got to give him credit there was no place run so you might as well stay and fight. Not start another fight but do you think a 308 has enough yam to punch trough the front end of a grizz also could you please let me know about the trem cns
