I'm with you catnthehatt.
I bowhunt with a compound and a recurve just so I can experience both sides. Same with a rifle, lever gun, bolt gun, mountain rifle, dangerous game rifle,223, 416, 308, 30-378...The more different types of hunting and shooting I try the more I want to try different types of hunting and shooting....One of these days I'd like to try one of those Quigley riles...That looks like a frustrating way to shoot long range! :D

I bet there are a lot of "closet" long range hunters in the precision rifle forum that would freer to discuss the sport if there were a dedicated LR hunting forum?

I see plenty of us over at Long Range Hunting!

Ft lbs of energy isn't the issue shot placement is...

In hunting/field conditions most can't place the shot consistantly enough @ 300 yards let alone 400 yards no matter the energy levels to risk taking the shot and you guys are continuing to say that you can do it every time which tells me that you haven't done it very much or your lying to yourselves.

Actually Camp Cook I find I'm more sucessful with the 300-400 yd shots than most closer shots. With the long shot I generally have time to calm the "buck fever", rest my heart rate, adjust my bipod, and wait for a good broadside shot, then concentrate on squeezing the trigger. The tougher shots for me generally involve trying to thread the needle through a poplar forest at close range on a slowly moving animal.

I also think that most hunters, with a solid rest(bipod) and taking there time are very capable of hitting the vitals of a moose at 300-400yds due to the size of the target.

Sorry, Cat, but just couldn't resist this:

FWIW, some of us have been hanging at long range hunting for quite some time ( as well as some other sites).

So this is where you do your long range game shooting!!

30/30 bullets are designed to work at 30/30 velocities and the assumption that the 308W at 400 yards will behave like a 30/30 may be correct, but choose the wrong bullet and your reward could be a moose with a pencil sized hole in its vitals.

Selecting a bullet that performs beyond 400 yards (at 308W velocities) requires careful thought as most .308 bullets are designed to stay together at 300 Winchester (point blank) impact velocities.
The guy using a 308 a 400+ yards needs to be sure the bullet he selects are soft enough to expand at 1800-1900fps. Selecting just any old .308 spitzer is not good enough.

Not saying it can't be done, but the wrong bullet will quite likely produce a dead animal with no blood trail for the hunter to follow.

Go to Long Range Hunting (400yds is a chip shot over there) and ask the same question....I'm willing to bet you get the same answer.

Which is why I said this:

There are bullets to achieve virtually any type of performance we want out there.

Most regular soft points will expand nicely at 1800 fps. Nosler Partitions are rated to expand at 1800fps, as are the Accubonds. Ballistic tips expand down to 1600fps. Hornady Interlocks will expand at 1800fps and I am sure there are many others.

I tend to think if a bullet isn't going to expand at 400 yards, it's not going to expand at 350, either.;)

Well, here , mostly!!:D

I realize we are suggesting the same thing, but check this out.

Load is 2700fps
165gr Nosler Accubond 400yd impact velocity 1991fps
165 Hornady Spire pt 400yd impact velocity 1847fps

I'd bet on the Accubond every time. Higher impact velocity and is more likely to expand at lower velocities.

I wouldn't consider using the Hornady at this velocity...Call it an undesirable margin for error. I'm not thinking this bullet will do its job (every time) at this velocity. I don't like it much more at 350 and consider it a poor selection for long range hunting with the 308 Win.

Will it work?....Most likely.
Is "most likely" good enough?.....Not for me.

In theory, I'd take an Accubond too. I like AB bullets and I like to play with loads. But I've never shot a moose at 400 yards with a .308..

Horshur posted above that he did using a regular factory cartridge.....

A. 308 M70 was the second rifle that I ever owned after the .303 LE Mk4. I'd feel comfortable with to 250-300 or so yds. with it on a moose. MInd you when I had mine, I didn't reload.

I used to drive a Toyota 4 cylinder 4X4 pick-up when I loaded it up with a camper and ATV trailer or boat trailer it still got the job done but just barely.

I now drive a Ford diesel 4X4 pick-up I can load it up with twice as much gear/weight and I hardly notice a performance difference from when it is empty gets every job done that I need it too do with ease.

I painted my barn red with a 6 inch brush.

Gary painted his barn red with a spray gun.

What color is my barn??

I have to get to the store and I own a toyota 4x4

Gary also needs to get the store, he owns a diesel ford quad cab 4x4.

Guess I won't make it.

To make soup for 4 people, I make soup for 4

To make lunch for 4 people, Gary makes soup for 8

If I screw up my recipe, I wasted 4 bowls of soup

If Gary screws his up, he wasted 8 bowls soup.

If both recipes are great, gary has still wasted 4 bowls of soup.

I travel north using my compass

Gary travelled north using his GPS

We did we go?

I have ### with my wife and get her pregnant,

Gary "knows" that in vitro works better than having ###, so he decides that they should get in vitro,

Is ### inadequate?

Alright, how much more stupid does the thread need to get?
