308 hunting bullet selection

I used Barnes 168gr TTSX it will drop anything in North America. If your hunting and I assume eating the meat it's 2020 I think its time to move away from ingesting lead particles from the bullets :) For hunting I wouldn't use anything else but a Barnes TTSX all copper bullet just cause they work and no lead !

I had enough lead to last a lifetime growing up in the 70's and 80's eating duck / geese / deer / moose / elk almost daily for dinner all shot with lead pellets and bullets and having to chew carefully to spit out any pellets or fragments you found cooked into the dinner :( Come to think about it ya all that lead might explain a lot about me as an adult HAHAHAHA i'm sure most people would agree like supernova

Anyone have any experience with the heavier TSX bullets? The 150 or 180 gr.? I've had good accuracy at the range with the 150 gr, but i'm concerned about the .308 having enough velocity to open them up properly on a deer.

If I recall correctly, all TSX's require 2000fps to expand well. Generally as a rule of thumb, you should keep impact velocities between 2000-2800fps with most bullets with 1800 and 3000 on the outer limits. The new long range bullets (eldx, accubond LR) are designed to expand at lower velocities. This applies to all bullets, but bonded bullets can take higher impact velocities generally. I've heard tell of shearing petals off a tsx at excessive velocities, but can't confirm that firsthand.

Eh, I'm pretty sure casting will give me more than eating element lead. Your body really doesn't readily absorb any metals until they're in an organic compound(or vapour). So in a metallic state it's a very minor amount to the point of insignificant unless you're ingesting daily.

That said, this is my truck gun that mostly sees action on problem animals. If I was actually hunting it'd be an accubond or tsx out of one of my hunting rifles. I intentionally left that detail vague so I could get a cross section of information rather than people trying to suggest something specifically for me. Which I think I got some good feedback here. So thanks everyone!

Speer hotcores are a bit slower expanding compared to some other cup and core bullets, Sierra Spt, Win Power points & Rem corlokt seem to expand a bit more, dropping down to 165gr hotcore & sending them faster will expand them faster.
I use SPTs and Power points in 300Sav and Hotcores in 30-06 to kind of match the toughness of the bullet to the intended impact velocity. I've shot a few deer through the lungs with 180 hotcores from 30-06 and it always killed them pretty fast but the exit holes weren't big compared to some of the softer bullets I've used.
