I'm really liking the way my gun shoots 168g Amax.
It did well with 150g BTHP as well due to its 1:12 twist, but of course these wouldn't fair well in a hunting scenario.

Does anyone have any other recommendations of bullets to try in that range?

Looking for something that would be better for closer engagements (<300m).

Here's the group and the gun (shot with a 3-9 scope)

Aslong as you place your shot through the ribs, you will get minimal meat damage, if you place your bullet in a shoulder blade or spine, then any of the bullet types will ruin more meat then what was required for a clean shot, for deer and bear as mentioned any cup and core soft piont will do great when placed properly.

Sorry I should have specified:

White tail and black bear.

Just curious if anyone has experienced meat damage at close ranges.

Used a good old fashion Hornady 165gr SP over 40gr of 3031 @ 2400 fps out of my 16" barrel 700 SPS for my 2020 deer. I handload for sub MOA and this load gives me what I want.

Buck was quartering away from me... heart shot at 35 yards and retrieved the bullet just under the skin on his right side.... "Didn't go 20".

Very minimal meat damage.

Don’t waste your money on the so called super premiums, in the .308 the 165 pr 180 Hornady Interlocks work fine on anything that walks North America, and are very accurate.

^This^ .... I use 150gr NBTs in one 308 and Hornady 180gr RNs in the other.

I honestly have no real preference. I have used 150's right up to 180's all with success in many different situations. Bang...flop.

I've killed a lot of stuff with Amax's, albeit nothing with the 168's. Just 75/105/162's, and all of them pushed pretty fast. From a 308 I wouldn't worry too much.

I agree with what other have already said above. I have harvested truckloads of close range whitetail deer with 180 gr Hornady Interlock Spire points, either DRT or they do not go very far. WK
