I have had some great replies to my question about bullets/loads for the .308, and i thank everyone who gave of their time.
I have a new box of .308 Sierra HPBT Match 150 gr #2190. Is this a good bullet for the .308 1:12 twist at 100 yards? If so, anyone have any good loading data for it? I am presently using Varget. I realize that I will have to work out the best loads for my particular rifle, but would appreciate any known accurate loads used for this set up by anyone. This is just about Target shooting. I have Norma brass, and CCI large rifle primers.( Heard that you can use magnum primers also?)
Thanks again,
Eastman.

Use standard primers. I bet your magic load will be between 45.0 and 47.0 grains of Varget. In fact, the odds are that that best load will be somewhere around 46.5.

I'd start with about 44.0 grains of Varget and work up in half-grain increments until you stop at 47.0. Seating depth is not as crucial with Sierra Matchkings as with other bullets (another reason why they have a stellar reputation), but I'd still try to seat your bullets to about .020" off the lands.

When working up a load for a new match rifle, I generally load four rounds at each charge weight, and I write the charge weights onto the brass with a Sharpie pen. Four rounds will be enough to tell you if you are onto something.

After you find one or two good loads, you can try varying up or down by a few tenths of a grain next time and see if that makes things even better. Once you find the load that looks best, you need to load up a full box of them and try them at 100, 200 and 300 yards, in 5-shot groups. That will confirm whether your load is really the best or whether it was a fluke.

When loading up for a hunting rifle, I'm nowhere near as diligent, but I still get very good results.

Varget wasn't around back when I was shooting alot of 308 but I will tell you I sure liked it in the 22-250. I especially liked how it went through the powder measure. If you get a chance to try the 168gr match bullet from sierra I would also recommend them----Cowboy
