hello all. will start reloading 308. can anyone provide me with some good load recipes? i do have a reloading data but it seems asking experienced works best as i learned from reloading 9mm...
i have 150 grain bullet and IMR 4895 powder. i will target shoot with this round in either an m14 or remmy 700.

i shoot a rem 700 with a 26inch heavy barrel. and i use the cheap hornady 150 gn bullets with 43 gns of imr4064 in winchester brass for plinking and for my little bit better accuracy round i guess you could say i use 155 gn hornady a-max with 42.6gns of varget in norma brass. my rifle seems to like them the best and they are very affordable.


just a side thought i dont know the total truth or its just a fluke but a good friend and range buddy of mine shot some 150 gn american eagle manufactured ammo and a couple of my rounds from his norinco m14 and the gun hated them it was having issues reloading the chamber because of the bullet weight so he went to 145gn MFS steel cased ammo for his m14 nd he has no issues now.
 
I have had the best luck with IMR 3031 and Varget.

I have tried 4895 but was not happy with the results. The best groups I got was:
43.5 of 4895
COAL 2.700

I used CCI 200 primers and honady Interlock 150 grain SP
By far the best result came from the 3031
 
Great.... I guess I should have asked for this info first. My Remington is with heavy barrel model as well. I imagine it would have been better to try what you use and work from there. I got American eagle brass and Winchester primers. They worked well in my Glock...
What if i can exchange this powder. I have not opened it and I do have to get more bullets so I have to go to the store soon anyway.
Reason i picked this powder is because I can use same stuff to reload .223 which I will in near future. Maybe not such a good idea after all...
I have used factory ammo until now, but I like reloading so this is why all this. My Norinco had no problem eating up whatever I fed the beast.
Hmm or should i try 4895 anyway? I am not the greatest shooter so every bit helps, better rifle better ammo...I am getting the stock shortened this week cause i learned its too long for me...Every day something new,.

I'd definitely try it, especially if it's just a pound of it. That goes fast. Every rifle is different, so it MAY work well for you, even if it doesn't for someone else. FWIW, I use 43 gr of IMR-4895 with the Hornady 150 FMJ, and 45 gr under a SMK168 in my bolt gun. Works fine for me. Another good one is BL(C)-2. It meters really nicely.
 
44 gr of IMR 4895 will work with 150's. You might be better off with 155 gr bullets in the Remington. IIRC the Jensen Palma load was 44.7 of 4895 with 155 SMK's.

Barrels all have different harmonics. I use a 700 heavy 20 inch barrel.
 
I'm using IVI 762 brass, 150gr hornady FMJ, imr4895, 42.5gr CCI primer, seated to the crimp, light crimped, shoots between 1.5-2.5 MOA from my m14, and under and inch from my rem vssf...
 
4895 is an excllent all-round powder. 43 to 45 will work well. Work up and find what's best.

A similar, but a bit better powder is REloader 15. 45 to 46 gr is very good.

Load your ammo to an OAL of 2.80"

For the M14, you could use BLC2 or H335 or WW748. They are ball powders and meter alost perfectly with no effort.

You can throw 4895 or 3031 or RL15, but as stick powders they won't throw perfectly uniform weights.
