.308 Long Distance Rifle What to get?

Personally I would choose the Remington 5R. It was one of my first precision type rifles and I still use one as a hunting rifle today ( a bit heavy for that application but I don't walk too much ). The savage rifles are very, very good but my preference is for the R5.

Yeah they can shoot great, that rifle was actually a 12 benchrest.

But the FTR is just as good.

savage ftr I drove one for about 200 rounds then ordered one from the custom shop still waiting for it to come but itll be sweet when it gets here
nice stock and good feel great accuracy
I liked it because im not used to shooting the big bench rest style stock and it was realy hurting my scores
im getting a right hand bolt left port
its getting a one piece base and nice rings not shure what kind of glass on it yet but min 30x mag

ABS! anything but Savage. Had one in the house, it was horrible. If you're saving for one keep saving until you have enough for a custom receiver, premium barrel and the stock you want. Its money that's only spent once. Actually the Savages aren't that terrible but the triggers are. Get a receiver you can put a Jewell trigger on and you will be happy.

Savage, Rem and Tikka all have tactical versions in your price range.

However, you can put together a much better shooting Savage with custom parts and stocks. The cost is not far from your $1500 budget and it will shoot competitively.

The 5R milspec has lived up to the hype. Mine shoots with custom rifles just fine. Lots of people seem to have had the same results. I also like the overall quality with the bead blasted stainless, HS stock and 1:11.25 twist rate.

That being said if you're planning on mostly shooting at 1000 yards then a 1:10 twist might work better. Or a different caliber.

I have a Jewell trigger on one 700 and when I first discovered I finally knew what having a good trigger meant. Suddenly I became disgusted with lesser rifle triggers. The one exception was the stock trigger on my 700 xcr tlr. it is a 40x trigger and is the only trigger I've liked from the major manufacturers.

The one thing that counts against savage is that their triggers haven't kept up. Back in the day of gritty 8 lbs triggers from factory rifles, the savage accutrigger was a welcome relief. I have two and really enjoyed them at the time. But now great triggers have become more available. The 40x is so good I wouldn't bother upgrading, and Jewell is the finest possible at any price.

Savage accutriggers have not advanced, and have been left in the dust. I think the only aftermarket are rifle basix, but those aren't much better anyways.

Remington makes a few rifles that will fit the bill but over-all Savage is the best off the shelf for the money you can buy... I know a guy that made a 1100 yard shot twice out of three shots with a $450.00 Savage and a $200.00 Nikon scope other then that he use a 6 to 9 codwell bi-pod.
