.308 low recoil with Barnes 150gr Flat Point?

I'm interested in creating a low recoil round in .308 Win for my son. I was thinking that 30-30 bullets are intended to expand at the lower velocities that you would find in a low recoil round. I also would like to stay with all copper bullets for hunting. Has anyone seen/tried the Barnes 150gr flat point in a .308? Seems like it would be a good bullet for game and still work in a low recoil round.
 
Good logic on your part.
Remington offers reduced recoil rounds, but if memory serves correct,
the bullet weight is less than the 150's you mention.
Others are shooting game with smaller diameter bullets in less bullet
weight.
A good recoil pad with a heavier rifle would help.
I walked this walk with my youngest daughter.
At the range, I used the Lead Sled for her and good muffs.
Shooting game and one shot, they won't remember the recoil.
Keep them comfortable shooting off the bench.
Memories a beetch.
 
If you want to stick with Barnes, use 130gr TTSX bullets, and load them lightly. They will still have lots of velocity, even with starting loads, so the trajectory will be similar to if he was using full power 165gr loads, but without the recoil. Barnes states that thier bullets will expand down to 1800 fps so even if you loaded them to 2500 fps they would still expand at least until 200 yards. Regular starting loads for the 130gr bullets in a .308 are in the 2800-2900 fps zone. If he can handle that, great. If not you can always tone it down and still have good performance with minimal recoil.
 
Good idea Gatehouse. I'm already loading full load 130gr TTSX for my light deer rifle. The poly tip and relatively high velocity even with reduced loading should still initiate expansion. I'll have to give that a try. My search for using 30-30 bullets has come up totally dry so it seems like it may be my route.
 
I tried the 150 FP TSX in my Marlin 30/30, all I could get was 2050fps and little if no expansion at 100yds into wet newspapers (even into a sand bank!). I think you would have to push them about 2400fps to get them to work properly @100yds. I'm going to try them out of my 3006 @ 2700fps and see how they work for whitetails.

Yes, was thinking of using their starting loads, most are 2700-2800fps which will be lots for what I want it for. Always had good luck with IMR 4064,H4895 & RL15 so will start there and use my Chronograph to be in the ballpark. I have 3 boxes of the 150gr TSX FP so want to use them up.
