You don't crimp primers, i use redding dies for 308 but have used the lee 308 as well.

This is what i use, this is not what you have to use, many people will tell you Neck size only, you have to crimp etc, this works for me and i do this after speaking to people who have reloaded for norc305/m14 for many many years.

Get your self a reloading manual, if you are member of a club ask the staff, ask at your local gun shop what they recommend, get as much info and try different loads.

FL (with no crimp)
Hornady 150gr btfmj projectiles
42gr imr4895
ivi brass
cci primers

thanks ive got the manuals and am all set up 150s with 4895 sounds good.ive had primers fall out in the mag in my fn49 7x57 and ive had to remove the primer crimp on military brass lots of times thanks again for the starting point you saved me alot of time

I also have to remove the primer crimp in the ivi brass, i use rcbs swager

Here's a copy of an older post of mine on .308/7.62x51 loading for the M14;



After resizing (with .308 Win dies) and checking trim length etc, you will also likely need to swage or ream the crimp ring around the primer pocket before inserting a new one with NATO cases.

To reload for your M14 type rifle you will need your prepped and sized cases,

Large rifle primers

spitzer (pointed) bullets in the 147-173gr range (ex 150gr FMJ, 168gr BTHP, 165 Ballistic Tip, 150gr Pointed soft point etc)

A powder in the suitable burn rate range for the action of this type of semi auto gas rifle such as IMR 4895, H4895, AA 2495, BL C2, H335, Win 748, IMR 4064 (and there are others).

Data from a reputable source or manual for 7.62 or .308 Win using these powders. Some people start at a lower than book load for the NATO cases.

I have found for me pressure was fine at the starting loads for .308 cases.

CCI LR primers
Cases trimmed to 2.005 (not required every time)
No crimping
IMR 8208 @ 41.0

Only do that once it has been fired in your M1A

Any brass not fired from yours needs to be full length sized.
