308 match king

Don't you just hate it when you step on your own ####:eek:You are dealing with a pretty tough crowd aka-jdub, lots of experienced shooters here. I also shoot iron sights, 300, 500 and 600yards is what we call short range. Long range starts at 800 and goes back to 1000 for us iron sight shooters. I enjoy punching hole in paper too, but it's allot more fun when the bullet hit the middle of the paper.

Hate to go on a tangent but, knowing that ¼MOA is excellent for a scoped rifle, what's considered "excellent" for a shooter using iron sights?

i appreciate this hobbie of ours, make no mistake. i find it rather tiring to get hazed for how one pursues it. if a guy is happy shooting paper at 300 yards and trying to get good hits with m/s why should that be a concern. i didn't request for loads or any other information. we should co-exist a little better imo, and maybe if we did the lawmakers would have less of a chance of banning our hobbie and sport into extinction.

imo, if you can hit plates at 300 yards with irons you doing good in my book. the best thing is you don't need to spend a lot of time or money to do so and you definitely do not require a 20X scope to do it.

Agreed 100%... There's quite a bit of elitism in shooting, just because of the "unique" nature of owning a firearm in a country where it's not readily obtainable. Dime for a dollar, there's less of this attitude South of the border.

The bull at 300 yards is 5.5 inches. At 500 yards it is 10.5", 600 is 13".
For long range the same target is used from 800-1000, the bull is 24 inches. Keep them all in the bull on a windy day with iron sights and that would be considered excellent.

In reality if you can hold 1/2 to 1 1/2 of a minute for elevation you will be doing fine. I don't like it if I lose a point to the wind but I really hate it when I make a good wind call and lose a point to elevation. The bull is just over 2 MOA except at 300 where it is a little less than 2 MOA. The better you can hold the better chance you will have keeping them all in.

aka-jdub, trust me it is allot more fun shooting bulls and V's than it is shooting inners and magpies. By shooting m/s ammo you are at the mercy of the ammo, you may never know if you could be the next olympian.
You can get m/s to shoot better if you pull the bullets, re-throw the powder and re-seat the bullet. It may not be match quality, but it will shoot better.

wow you guys actually hit a 24" bull at 1000 yards with iron sight? that's super impressive to me! haha i couldn't do that with 25X scope

let me put this out there if i may. i posted this question on another thread but will try here too.
i would like an approximate price on what it would cost to reload 1000 rounds of .308. starting with nothing, i would need press, dies, miscellaneous items related, brass, primers, bullets etc. basically everything i would need. m/s is rare and getting pricey so rolling my own maybe a path i might try.
thanks for any help.

Redding Press: $160
Redding Dies (.308) $88
RCBS Powder measure: $120
Lyman Caliper $40
Redding Powder Dribbler $25
RCBS Hand Primer tool (very nifty) $90
Dillon Digital Scale $200
Primer Pocket Cleaner $15
Chamfer $20
RCBS case trimmer $100

that's what i just bought and the price not sure if i got hosed? but that's a start...as for cases i had my own so i didn't have to buy so hopefully somebody can fill you in on that but for bullets i bought:

250 Rd's Nosler J4 Competition 168 Gr (basically same as Sierra Matchking) for $67
Powder Varget: (enough to do 200 rds) $30
Primers (Federal 210) 1000 for $45

so $150 for powder, $260 for bullets, $45 for primers then add in cases your probably looking at $300 for 1000? just a guess so probably $750 to start for 1000 but after you've got the cases then it's sweet savings! hope that's helpful i'm sure more experienced people will cut me apart haha but that's what i payed just recently.

no actually it is reasonable. I would stay away from EBAY deals when it comes to dies, its usually cheaper to pick the stuff up from wholesale or the EE then to pay the "discount" + "shipping" on an ebay purchase.... boy have I learned that one.

STEP #1 = GET A GOOD RELOADING MANUAL. SPEERS = NOOB FRIENDLY!

I would skip the RCBS powder measure and the digital scale + dribbler and just get the new lyman chargemaster/loadmaster 3 (cant remember exact name) it is $330 or so at WhoreSports. worth every penny. with the restricter for the stick powders it is VERY VERY accurate and repeatable, which is where most noobs make the mistakes that break stuff, plus the memory and beeper is easy to use and make fast.

I would also skip the caliper for $40 and go to princess auto, you can save 20 bucks on a sale (which is every other week it seems).

The RCBS press is my favourite and the RCBS dies seam to be cheaper (MAKE SURE YOU BUY SMALL BASE .308 DIES if it is a SEMI AUTO .308)

RCBS Case trimmer is a good thing to have but you can definatley buy it a bit later. Learn to make consistent ammo before you try to make match ammo, a bit of case length variance is going to matter less then you learning how to actually use the tools and develop loads and seat depths.... etc.

as for the hand primer tools = great.

ALSO get a LONG STEM FUNNEL (15$@WSS) but worth EVERY PENNY. you'll never knock your tray over, which is a FU$#ING PAIN IN THE ASS.

when you get to the point of building match / tuned ammo you'll have a great understanding of how powder works with various ammos and you'll have every tool in the book (at least I did) it is addicting.

OH YEAH, there is a RCBS starter kit with the rock chucker, it is a great deal as it comes with all the basics to start reloading.

Things you will end up with later on if you stick with it:

case tumbler
case sifter (to seperate tumbling medium)
neck turning equipment
primer / case prep station

remember, there is going to be an increase in accuracy from ANY rifle if you tune ammo to that gun. But there comes a point when you actually have to start buying guns that are capable of exacting accuracy. reloading only gets you so far.

cheers.

Wow how nice of you all to hijack my thread. I just want to find reasonably priced match ammo about 1000 rounds maybe 2 if the price is right all from the same lot. What you do with your money or what you want to shoot is none of my buisness.

Edited: Cause it was more of a rant.

...the best found so far is from the US it all seems to double as it crosses into Canada. There are though some stores in the US selling for the same price as here...
