Who has\uses one of these? In comparison to a .300WM, is the recoil any less, due to less powder capacity?

308 Norma

The 308 Norma Mag is a wild cat that duplicates the performance of the 300WM with a longer neck and slightly less powder. I cant feel the difference in recoil between the two, but prefer the 308 Norma as a reloader.

The 308 Norma is a factory cartridge still being loaded by Norma. The 30-338 is a wildcat.

Neither achieve the velocity of the 300 Win Mag, especially when it is handloaded. :)

I have had several of each. I really like the 308 Norma. But I think there is little difference from the 300 Win Mag. I've never reloaded so my factory load findings are the 300wm and 308 Norma are nearly the same.

Reloading can open up a whole new world.

So is there any advantage to the Norma over the WM??

The .308 Norma Magnum, my favorite 30 cal magnum. The longer neck of the .308 Norma is supposedly an advantage. Power wise, the difference between it, the .300wm and the 30-338 is like splitting hairs. Not enough of a difference to write home about. I now have my second .308 Norma, a Schultz & Larsen and its definately a keeper.

If you want .300 WM performance but with less recoil, get a .30-06. Most guys will never notice the performance difference between these two in practical field conditions.

I shoot a 308 NM, and have four 300 WM, as well as a 300 RUM and 300 Wby. There is more of a velocity difference between the four 300 WMs then betwen the 308 NM and a 300 WM. In the real world, no difference. The big difference, is when you go to buy ammo or components. The 308 NM will cost you a lot more then the 300 WM. Components for the 30-338 aren't any more money then the 300 WM, (except for the custom dies, it's a wildcat), but you have to handload for this one to use it at all. Loading data for the 308 NM and the 30-338 are interchangable. - dan

Its not that I need a .300WM. I have a .338WM and I'm planning to build a .338-06, so I'm pondering whether to rebarrel the .338WM to a .30-338 or ???. The reason for the .30-338 and not the .300WM is I have a bunch of new .338 brass.

Have it barrelled to 308 Norma Mag.

I have used 338 mag brass a lot to form both 308 and 358 Norma Mag. It fireforms perfectly, except with a slightly shorter neck. Heck, I have made scores of 308 Norma by necking up and fireforming 7mm Rem Mag.

As well, it is always easier to sell a rifle chambered for a factory loaded cartridge when that time comes..............unless you are selling it to a gunnut! :D

You're right, there are a number of different cartridge cases that can be effectively transformed into .308 NM. I've been fairly lucky in acquiring a good sized stock .308 Norma Mag, Norma cases over the years. I probably have enough to last me for a reasonable amount of target practice and hunting for as long as I'll be shooting.

The advantage the 308Norma has over the 300WM is length. It's about 1/8" shorter.If you have standard 3.340 30-06 box ,it's a better fit.I reload,so that's why I chose it for a P-17 rechamber.

The 308 Norma is a classic which was essentially a 30 Newton with a belt. It was designed to offer 300H&H performance in a standard length action. It did this and more. The 300 Winchester Mag was designed by advertising executives to be physically larger than the 308 Norma ( bigger is better). Winchester felt the 30/338, being slightly smaller than the Norma, would be a tough sell so they went with the short necked 300. It was even easier for companies to BS the shooting public back then because chronographs were not commonly available.
Loaded to equal pressures, the 300 Win mag has about a 75fps advantage over the Norma. Factory loads in the Norma outperform the 300 but pressures are significantly higher. Regards, Bill.

A 308 Norm mag passed through my collection, for some reason i never did keep it dont know why i liked the cartridge?
I have seen only one 30-338 at the range and as I recall the velocity was all quite close to my 300 win mag. The only 30 cal rifles that heat up a bit that i own are the 300 wby, get an extra 100-150 fps out of a 165 gr and a big jump to a 30-378 that i get an extra 300 fps out of which is very close to the300 rums?( i dont own a 300 rum).

One cartridge i wish to own is a 300 H&H a classic

Well, I find the .308 Norma an interesting cartridge, and it may be more suited to my needs than the .338WM is.

SO, can a .308 or .30-06 barrel be rechambered to .308 Norma without any problems?
