Inherited from my grandfather. Parker & Hale .308 Norma Magnum Safari Edition.

Kicks like a damn mule and the ammo is pricey (last I checked $100 for 20 rounds).

My grandfather made some amazing shots with it though.

It's my favorite 30 cal magnum. The first one I had was a Parker Hale Super Safari. The one I presently have is a Schultz & Larsen 65DL.

It shots well with 200gr Sierra SBT's but I'm presently working on loads using Barnes TTSX bullets.

The .308 Norma mag was the first "short magnum". It came out before the 300 winmag and was revolutionary in that it fit in a regular size action.

It was very popular for a short time but the 300 winmag took over in popularity over 40 years ago. I don't know of any current factory rifles chambered for it.

The .308 Norma mag is a great cartridge if you reload. Factory ammo is expensive and not very common nowdays.

Ammo is cheap if you reload ? FL resize 7mm Rem mag brass and load...........Mine is a FN Safari Browning makes one ragged hole with 150gr bullet and nickle sized with 180's...........Harold

I also have 308 Norma Mag in a Remington 725 action shoots pretty well, funny you fellas should mention this calibre, I was just looking at it today. The rifle I have was originally in 30-06. Ellwood Epps rechambered and customized it i.e bolt face, mag rails etc. to 308 Norma Mag back in the early 60s, the original owner had to send it back to solve an extraction problem which was fixed at a later date. Since I can't use open sights I would like to remove the front sight base which is sweat or silver soldered on. Any ideas on how I can do this without damaging the barrel?:nest:

I don't know if it's worth the bother.

Great cartridge. Someday I'll build a custom 700 so chambered. Factory ammo $70/20 rounds but not easy to find

Factory ammo and brass seem to surface at gun shows;). At least, that's where I've been lucky enough to pick up my 'supply':D. Froming it isn't much of a problem or difficult, but being a 'puritan':), I've stuck with the real thing.

The Barnes 180gr I got from you are slated for testing in my 308 NM:). Oh, I'd go for a model 70 to use as a basis for a custom job in 308 NM.

In the mid 60s there was still genuine turkey shoots being held. To get rid of his turkies a farmer would get some type of imrovised target holder at a hundred yards, and put either ten or twelve targets on it. Shooters paid a dollar each for a shot and the one who hit closest to the centre of his target, got to take home a live turkey.
I once sighted in a Schultz and Larson in 308 Norma, used Norma factory ammo and competed at the shoot.

I like it, but like commonality better. Bring to nearest smith get him to use a hand reamer, and make it a 300 win Mag. That way you can pick up shells in Rankin, iqaluit, or BumF@*k nowhere.

till the airline loses your luggage on the way to Okotokiaks for a caribou hunt, then what do you do. I like the physics/neatness of the odball's including the RUM wsm, etc.... but having had first air chase me without luggage for 3 days, sorry I'll take a standard caliber. BTW it was really freakin cold without my winter gear.

I was going to do that with mine until I looked up the specs on the 308 Norma Mag compared to the 300 Win Mag. The 308 Norma has the 300 Win beat by 100 fps in most reloading manuals:eek: and like some of the guys here have said 7mm Rem Mag brass can be easily converted to 308 Norma. The only drawback is it's a reloader's project unless you are financially well to do and patient.

I hunted for over 20 years with a Voere actioned 308 NM only stopped using it when I switched to a 300RUM...

Excellent round...

A buddy of mine is building one on a large ring mauser action, I am torn between the 308 NM and 338-06 for a build on a bubba 03 Springfield.

My .308 Norma is built on a Brazilian Mauser action. It shoots 180 gr Hornady IL at 3150 fps into groups averaging 1.2" at 100 yards. I just resize 7 mag brass and use H1000 powder. I also bought another rifle that was originally chambered in .308 Norma. It is a Dumoulin made in Belgium, but I haven't shot it yet. I'm saving some $$ for a new stock to put it in, and for a scope.
