308 Norma Mag.

You sure about that velocity the best I could get from a 26" barrel with Norma MRP powder & 180gr bullets was 3063fps.

A buddy of mine is building one on a large ring mauser action, I am torn between the 308 NM and 338-06 for a build on a bubba 03 Springfield.

In my opinion your buddy sure has the best action to build on.
The Springfield has a very poor reputation for handling escaped gas. I don't like to rain on your picnic, but I would look for a better action, before I spent money on it.
Obviously, this is just me and my opinion.

I'm as sure as my chrony. I've had it out measuring velocities several times, and when it's -20C out, then it does 3050 fps. When it's about -5C then it measures 3100 fps. When it's +5C then it's at 3150 fps. The last time I had it out it was +17C and the velocities were at 3200 fps, and the primers were looking pancake flat, so I quit shooting.

Yes, I make sure the chrony is completely opened, and even with the H1000, which is an EXTREME Powder, and supposed to be unaffected by temperature changes, I still see an obvious effect from temp.

I know my loads are a bit hot, but when I hunt it's usually cold out, and in cold temps the primers still have rounded corners, and there are not other pressure signs, so I'm happy with the load!

Looking at normas site they are within 30 fps of each other, I can buy a lot of extra ammo or reloading components for the price difference. 26.99/20 vs 55/20 at 28$/box if I buy 5 boxes, I am ahead 140$ before I reload, so 180gr hornady's at 40$/100, 1# powder/roughly 100 loads, and 4/100 primers. I have doubled my shooting for the same price. I am a cheap bugger. Sorry I know you'll disagree:nest:

Had the chance many years ago to buy one on a P17 action at Gordons in Victoria. An interesting round. Might have to add one to my collection of 300 magnums one day :)

Another caliber on my like to have list is the 358 Norma.

If you buy ammo instead of reload, then of course you'd buy the 300 win mag. No question. I like the Norma mag because it is different. Not everyone has one, and not even everyone can get one. I also like the shorter bolt throw. I'm more used to standard length cartridges, and in the heat of the moment I'd hate to short-stroke the bolt. This is obviously not an issue with people who are accustomed to the mangum length action. Also, since mine is built on a mauser action, the 300 win mag wouldn't fit, but with the Norma I get the same performance and it fit my action.
I'm not saying the 308 Norma is better than the 300 win, but I am saying I really, REALLY like mine:) If others like other things, then that's great.

Oh, and I don't shoot a 7 Rem Mag either. I went oddball again and got the 7 WSM. I guess I just like the less popular cartridges [except I have 2 30-06's]

I mentioned in post #3 that the first 308 NM I had was a Parker Hale Super Safari and at the recent gun show in Duncan, there was one identical for sale. A gun show regular from Duncan had it. I sold my PH when I picked up the Schultz & Larsen.

Initially I wanted what I call the big three efforts of co-operation between Norma and Schultz & Larsen those being 7x61 S&H, 308 NM and the 358 NM. I wanted all three calibers in Schultz & Larsen rifles. I had the 308 NM for a while and fairly recently picked up a 7x61 S&H. I've passed up a few other brands of rifle in 358 NM and was holding out for a Schultz & Larsen, until this one was offered to me:redface:.

A Husqvarna 1651 and it goes well with my 30-06 Husqvarna Feather Weight.

A while ago, in anticipation of eventually getting a 358 NM at a couple of gun shows I purchased a set of dies and seven boxes of Norma factory ammo, 250gr. With the initial range test, it seems to shoot well.

;)Get a 358 Norma Magnum 444shooter. You 'need' one.:)

Not to be pissy but a 300WM is a standard length round.

"shorter bolt throw"?..how does that work when they are usually chambered in the same length action?

I should build a 308 Norma someday....I do have a fairly heavy sporter blank here in a chrome-moly A&B barrel......need a suitable action...

My mistake. I've never owned a 300 win mag, and I thought the Norma was significantly shorter. After some quick looks at specs, I see I was mistaken. [That is unless you consider a couple thousandths of an inch significant.]

A measurement that supposedly is a significant plus or asset is the somewhat longer neck the 308 NM has.

Heya Cam
Dwayne here.
If you need a set of dies with low run-out/from a single cutter (rcbs), that I gots mis-sent for .308 instead of 358 Norma, you can have it for your next project. Just hand over those 44's!!
Hope everything is good.

I'll definitely do a deal with you on the 44's just don't need your dies I'm not really shooting the 308 Norma since I got the 300RUM... :D

Can't have enough 30 mags. 308 NM is one of my favorites, but I also have a 300 Wby, three 300 WM's, a 300 RUM, had a 300 Ackley Short Magnum (almost identical to the 308 NM), a 30-338 (ditto), and have a couple of actions that will end up as a 30-378 Wby and a 300 Pegasus. Played with a 300-416 Rigby Improved for a while (not mine, belonged to a buddy and I did the load development for it), that was a quick 30. Haven't done much with the short 30 magnums (WSM and SAUM), or the wildcat 30 WSS, (yet). Sigh. So many guns, so little time. - dan

Mine is a converted Remington P-17 Enfield. Kicks like a sideways mule. I shoot 200gr Speer SPZ and it flatens bears with authority. I reform 300win Magnum brass to reload in the Norma. Accurate rifle however as Chuck Hawks says, "There ante two cents worth of difference between a 308 Norma and a 300Win Mag."
