308 norma magnum

I own a lot of rifles in a lot of calibers but my 3 favorites are my custom BBR in 7x61 S+H, a custom Mauser in 308 Norma and my custom Dumolin in 358 Norma. All tack drivers and very easy to load for.

.308 Norma Mag

I acquired this .308 Norma a few months ago (center in pic). It's a factory F.N. Supreme Mauser, same as the later F.N. Browning line except slimmer forend. After re-scoping it, I was able to get 1" groups consistantly from bench at 100 yards with some old factory Norma loads. I have dies and brass but havent had chance to do any load testing yet. Don't think I need to improve much anyway. Surprised how little the recoil is in this combination. Might take it along with the .375 Browning (top) and Brno 7X57 (bottom) to Alberta in September for deer/Elk.
Cheers

good info. i appreciate hearing what people have to say about 308nrm.being an oddball i love, but can anyone help with gear to reload it .dies and more brass, factory stuff too much coin.just because she s old and almost forgotten doesnt mean icant have fun with.

You could always just send it to me.

I would then resize some 7mm Rem Mag brass to 308 Norma Mag and develop several accurate and powerful loads using various bullets from 150 to 220 gr for hunting big game.

Or, you could just buy a set of dies and enjoy doing it yourself! :D

If you want to get the length right, you need to start with something a little longer then the 7 RM or 338 WM. 300 WM does the job, set the shoulders back a tad, trim to length, and fireform in your rifle for perfectly shaped brass. Easier with new brass rather then once fired. There is brass out there, not a lot, but it does show up. In the meantime, just get a set of dies (I see them at practically every gun show), buy some 300 Wm brass, a case trimmer, and go to town. - dan

Regardless of the hype, all things considered equal, the case that holds the most powder will get the higher velocity, it may not be much higher and it may not be worth it at all, case shape has nothing to do with it either. In fact you may have to increase powder 10% to get a gain of 1%, and that's not worth worrying about. A smaller case may be more efficient and get more speed per grain of powder, but should not get as high a vel. as the larger case(all things considered equal).

I have an old converted Enfield P-17 in 308 Norma. It shoots good, kicks like a sideways mule, kicks worse than my 300 Weatherby and 375H&H, and kills bears at 270 yards. What more is there to say? Getting 2843fps with IMR4831 and 200gr Speer SPZ, book says 2900 and change.

If it ain't broke don't fix it................I neck shot a mulie at 450+ yards[ bipod of course ]because that's all that was sticking out.......................Browning Safari FN .308 NM..........Harold

Longbranch,
To me, your FN rifle does not look like a Supreme action, more like a post '49 commercial M/98 (pre-Supreme). The Supreme have a smooth bolt shroud and a right side sliding safety (quite in the same fashion as a HVA 1640) and was the last M/98 model manufactured by FN. What I think I see in the picture is the standard M/98 bolt shroud.

I agree with the others that there is very little difference in performance between a .300 WM and a .308 NM. The Norma Magnums were the WSM of the time, allowing one to rechamber a standard action to a magnum round. And it does it very well.
