Hey all. Purchased my first .308 bolt gun, and I'm needing advice for reloading. I'll be shooting paper mostly at 200, and I want to reload. (Longer will come after I learn the basics)

Can anyone offer advice on what projectile in the 165-180gr range i should buy to keep costs down? I'm hoping there is a cheaper option than the Hornady stuff.

Thx!

Hornady is already pretty good value for your dollar. I bought a 500 count box of 168gr AMAX and it was $199. A 500 count box of Sierra Match Kings was $299 or something.
I also tried the Hornady 168gr BTHP Match bullets and they run around $.40/each as well.
You could try 150gr FMJ/BT which are $226/1000 from Budget. They shoot MoA with several different loads/powders in my Rem 700.

SMK and AMAX in 168, 175, 178 are accurate in most rifles. 35c+ each.

Searched but haven't yet found any cheap 30 cal match bullets. For 8" gong plinking NORC 308 at 40c each works well, why waste match ammo to ring gongs.

I know it's smaller that what you have listed but my 308 loves 155gr berger hunting vlds, can put 5 touching shots.

You planning on hunting with it or shooting targets? Hunting doesn't need match bullets(no such thing as cheap match bullets.). Hunting bullets tend to be a bit less expensive. Speers are the least expensive, but also not the greatest accuracy wise. Dandy for hunting though.
Where you buy stuff makes a difference too. Some shops, like everything else, are more expensive than others.
For mostly 200, use a 150, 155 or 165 hunting bullet. Partial to IMR4064 myself.

Depends on the rifle. My Remington 700 is a bit fussy on bullets. I have a 1:12 twist heavy varmint barrel (SPS). It likes the 168grainers I feed it. 308 is pretty versatile for powder use. I have had good results with H4895 and Varget. Not bad results with BL(c)2 as this powder is still a work in progress...Savage 10 series rifles are nice and quite accurate out of the box as well. Keep in mine, if you want to shoot paper...I recommend a good stock, not the factory stock unless it comes with a H & S Precision on it or something more robust for target shooting, a good trigger, and a detachable box mag that feeds rounds reliably.

I was thinking of switching to amax bullets as well, but I was curious if they are legal to hunt with in BC, I thought I saw somewhere that it was illegal to hunt with a jacketed or "frangible" bullet and I'm not really sure what is considered to be one. Thanks in advance for the advice.

AMax is a match bullet for shooting paper. not designed for hunting. But, if you HAD to use a match bullet for hunting, AMax would be a good choice.

For cheap paper punching with best accuracy, try the 155 gr match bullets. Nosler are the cheapest I have found.
