308 or 270WSM

You should really think about the purpose of your rifle:
  1. Do you want a practical medium range large game rifle?
  2. Do you want an accurate long range large game rifle?
  3. Another type of rifle that I did not thing about?

Once you've decide what you really want:
  1. 308 Win BAR, reliable, inexpensive ammo, quick follow-up shot
  2. 270 WSM bolt-action, very accurate, extra 100-150 yards effective range
  3. I don't know the answer since it don't know the question ;)

I think that you need the extra accuracy of a bolt-action rifle with high velocity long range cartridges.

Nice handling, lightweight and accurate.I also think that the mag setup is better on the x-bolt versus the a-bolt floorplate mag .

Had a WSM, not a fan anymore.
They really don't do anything another established cartridge can do but they cost more to buy & feed and in many cases the magazines hold less. So why?
I like the 308 but don't own one at the moment, nore do I see getting one soon. But of the two I'd go 308.
As for which gun, well thats for you to decide, theres lots of pretty eye candy out there.
At the moment the Finnlight has my eye but I like the BLR in laminate/stainless.
X bolt is nice but the mag catch looks like it could get broken off (my opinion). To me the rifle is excellent but then they cheaped out on the mag design/execution- this isn't the only brand or rifle I have this opinion on.
cheers

No handloaders there? If you handload the .30 Winchester Short Magnum sounds good to me. Several makers of custom rifles tell me that the accuracy they are getting from them is very good as well compared to a lot of calibers.

Ballistics-wise, would it make much difference between the WSM in .270 or .308 and the .30/06 or the .308 Winchester...?

I have them all but prefer both my 7mm Mauser and 7mm Rem Mag. But that damned 30 wsm sure swats flies...

I'd go .308 of the options you listed, but if I already had a BAR in 270 win what I'd actually do is get a BAR in .338 win mag and then be set for big game.

The whole .270 win, 308 win, 270 wsm thing is splitting hairs big time in terms of a moose rifle.

My choice is 308. The angle of the shoulder/neck of any wsm cartridge is a disadvantage when loading, compared to for instance a 308 or a 270.
