The difference between the .308 and .30-06 is a half inch of case length and about 100 fps with the same bullet weight. Ballistically they're identical. The only advantage the .30-06 has is being able to use heavier bullets. Up to and sometimes past 220 grains. The max bullet weight for the .308 is 200 grains. Both just love 165 grain hunting and 168 grain match bullets with IMR4064. The only real decision to make is the action length. Long action or short. Mind you, the .308 is inherently slightly more accurate, but not enough to worry about for hunting. It most certainly is NOT "weaker".
