If money was not an issue I’d own a lot more rifles. And most of them would be in the standard non-magnum chamberings. For example, I’ve always had an itch to own a 7x57, a .280 Rem., a 7-08, a .257 Roberts, and so on. But I have a good .270 Winchester, so I don’t
need any of the others.
There are a few .30 calibres I would also like to own, .308 Win. being among them . However, I also happen to own a very good 30-06, so I really don’t
need the others either. That is one problem with owning one of the best in a class; the others are redundant.
As far as recoil goes between the .308 and ’06, I think it boils more down to bullet weight, stock design, rifle weight and recoil pad. I own 2 30-06 rifles, but my brother’s .308 is more brutal on the bench than either. As for accuracy, well, any good ’06 can be made to group well under a MOA. Which is better then I can often shoot from the bench, let alone under field conditions. If you were more interested in competitive target shooting, then perhaps any small accuracy advantage the .308 may have could tip the scales in that direction.
If you have neither a .308 nor an ’06, then go for the ’06. I doubt that you’ll ever regret that decision.
