.308 or 30.06 ?

115 posts later. Which one did you get? which riflel did you buy?

I didnt feel like reading 11 pages

We'll it's been almost two months, did you buy one yet???? 30-06 is my preference just because of the bullet selection and the history(for some reason that is an issue to me).
The reason I haven't been around to comment is because I have been away for the last two months for apprenticeship training. I am going back in less than two weeks for two more months.

The rifle or rifles I have settled on are either the Tikka T3 or the Sako A7. I am still not settled on caliber yet. I was all gung ho for the .06 then I started looking at ammo prices and the .06 was almost 15 dollars more per box. I would like to do a lot of shooting at the range along with hunting so I am now leaning towards the .308 plus it's a military round and doesn't that mean I can buy surplus ammo usually at big discounts?

I will not be buying anything until income tax time. My next dilemma now is stainless steel or blued and wood or composite. I have been reading lots about everything I think I am going to get SS Composite.

308 is a good but wood is a lot nicer to look at than composite SS is sweet too..

Surplus 7.62 NATO ammunition used to be available, just as surplus .30/06 used to be available. Today, surplus 7.62 ammunition at big discounts is as dead as the Soviet Union.

In a SHTF scenario, 7.62 NATO might be scavenged. But so too might be .30/06.

Whether commercial .308 Winchester is more or less widely available than commercial.30/06 is debatable.

308 and 7.62 are not the same, higher pressure in 7.62 and although it will work it isnt ideal. T3s all have the same length action so going to a short action caliber doesnt give you any advantage. Make sure you aren't seeing old stock of 30-06 vs 308 and that you're comparing identical ammunition, they go for the same price here in NB and i havent heard of a big price difference before. Either way you'll be happy, just handle the T3 to make sure it fits you nicely. I went for the savage american classic instead but can't stop thinking of the T3, it fit me like a glove... I'll probably end up with one eventually, either the wood stocked hunter or the stainless. I got the savage this spring and I was overly cautious with the rifle, couldn't let it wiggle around between the truck seats, couldn't let it lie in the back seat... i think I'm the kind if guy that needs a "beater" rifle to hunt with so I can enjoy it without worrying about dinging the wood or scuffing bluing.

Forget both of these and get a .270 win. Flat shooter and will take any moose you can find. Many moose taken here in Newfoundland with the .270 with a 140 gr bullet.

Two words... Mosin Nagant. :D

Ah lots of used s**te out there-get both and check them out. The 308 will do "almost" as well as the 308 if you are talking factory. Reloads make a huge difference so you can load either up or down depending. My 06 is loaded hot and the 308 is not even close but I am working on that:)

Yep, same price bud. Almost the same gun to. You might be more settled in your thoughts and just buy which ever is in stock, unless your reloading and want the little bit extra from the .06 or if the wider selection in bullet weights make a difference then .06 aswell. don't forget to post pictures.

I used to believe that it was bad to fire 7.62 in a WIN chambered rifle...its not. On their page of 'Dangerous Combinations' SAAMI advise against firing 5.56 in a .223Rem , but not 7.62 in a Win.

I have a 30-06, a lightweight Remington model 700. It's a fine rifle, and it's whacked its share of moose, deer and bear, but as I get older, I'm relying more and more on my old 6.5 Swede. Why? Because it's a pleasure to shoot because the recoil is so much less.

So my advice would be to anyone considering a .308 or a 30-06 would be to go with the .308. It's a fine cartridge and it will handle any buck or bull on this Continent.

I did not bother to read every post so I risk wading in here at this late stage.

.308 Win or 30/06?
If you are going to use 150-168 grain bullets, go with the .308 Win. and 1:12 twist barrel. If shooting 180 grain and up, the 30/06, 1:10 twist. If you want to shoot ALL bullet weights from 150 to 250 grains, 30/06. All things being equal, the .308 Win recoils a little less. .308, short action, 30/06 standard length action. Any thing else is minor, IMHO.

oh wow, is this a necro thread or someone started another new one?
here is 11,657 '.30-06 vs .308' threads distilled into one line:

If you reload, want to shoot bullets over 180gr, and 1/2" of receiver length doesnt matter to you then get the .30-06 -- otherwise get the .308.

I have a Remington 7600 Carbine, and a Thompson/Center Venture, both in 30-06. I have shot many guns in both calibers and have never really noticed much difference in regards to caliber. I will say that the model of gun makes the most difference... my little Remington pump kicks like a horse compared to the TC Venture. I had the Remington first, and was going to get a 308 for my next gun, but the TC Venture wasn't available in 308. As most people on here have said, find a gun you like and get it in whatever caliber is available... I think you will be more than pleased with either.

Good luck, and have fun with whatever you choose.

I was having the same debate a few months ago. I had a hard time deciding too and didn't make my decision till I was at the counter. I ended up getting the .308 which I am very happy with. I still want the 30-06 though and intend to get one eventually.
