308 or 7mm rem mag for moose

This will be my first year hunting moose and i was wondering what would be the better choice i have a 308 but im toying with the ideal of getting a 7mm rem mag. I know that they both kill moose but is one any better than the other? shots will be 150y or closer as that's my personal limit and capabilities
 
You have no worries in picking either one to dispatch a moose at the distances you want.

The difference will be in the size/weight of firearm and cost of loaded store bought ammunition. .308 being more plentiful and slightly cheaper, the LA vs SA is a slight weight difference and longer barrel also.If you are recoil sensitive the 7mm has a bit more.

Find a rifle that fits and is comfortable in your hands, chambering is secondary.

I've killed lots of moose with a 308 but I'd say go with the 7 mag as your shooting ability will increase over time and so will the distance of your shots...honestly either one will work just fine.
 
if you don't have one already get a really nice scope for your 308 and spend your money on ammo and practice , practice , practice .........

the 7mm will shoot a bit flatter but other than that it has no real advantage over the 308 .

your 308 may in fact be a lighter rifle to carry ...... which can make a huge difference in how you feel at the end of a long day .

your ability to properly place a shot is what will make a huge difference . and that comes with practice .... lots of it .
 
It doesn't matter which one you use. You don't really need an excuse to buy a new rifle either. If you want a new gun get a new gun, buying new guns is what makes most of us tick... just dont reason your purchase on the lowly performance of your 308 because it is perfectly capable.

It's getting kinda late in the year for choosing a new moose rifle.

I'd stick with the 308 this year. Buy some good ammo and get some shooting in before the hunt. If you still think you want another rifle, I'd leave that till the spring/summer and repeat the process.

At 150yds, your 308 will work fine.

A 308 is a great all around caliber, you dont really need more except the big bear,but a 7 mm is a great caliber and a new toy to think about, you could invest in very good glass, ex, S&B, that really make a difference on a good rifle... JP.
 
The 7 mag is ballistically superior to the .308, that is it has a higher muzzle velocity and shoots similarly shaped bullets with less drop beyond the sight in distance, but I doubt if you could win an argument by stating that one kills better than the other at 150 yards. If your moose season extends late into the year, you have time to buy a new rifle and work out a good load for it, but if that's your choice, buy it because you want a new rifle, not because you think you need one.

X2 - 308 win is a great cartridge- 7mm rem mag is a greater cartridge- BUT do you really need it or just want it ? :D
 
You have a 308, that'll do the job just fine, why would you buy another gun balistically so similar!
I'd take the $$ & go out & buy a nice 223 or ? to play with :wave:
 
You will do great with 308 Win and a good premium bullet.
My hunter and anglers best moose hunting guide is moving from a Remington 700 270 Win to a Sako TRG22 308 Win this year for moose after 30 years of success with 270 Win 150gr Partition. He chose 308 Win because of its accuracy, low recoil and excellent killing power with 180gr TSX.

Both will work very well, I have used both with very similar results, I prefer my .308 as it is a shorter lighter rifle with mild recoil. Most important is shooting the rifle you enjoy most and shoot well. Good bullets are important, probably more so with the magnum if the range is shorter. This year I used 150 grn speer hotcore loaded mild in my .308. Last year 160 grn accubond in my 7mm.

I dont understand, why wouldnt a .308 work for 150yds and under?
