Hey all, I'm new to this site but not new to firearms. Unfortunately I am fairly new at the precision shooting game and I was wondering if someone could tell me what a Palma 95 chamber is? Am I asking this question in the right place? The reason I ask is because I have severely caught the "accuracy" bug and I'm looking to buy my first "accurate out of the box" gun. I thought about a custom rig right off the bat but I have decided I would rather buy a complete factory gun and shoot it untill I need a better aftermarket barrel.
I am looking at the target/ benchrest line of model 12's from Savage. I was initially debating between the F-TR and the Dual port model(in .308). I don't think I really need a dual port reciever but the stock is alot nicer. Then I saw the model 12 Palma and I really like the upgraded stock with the adjustable cheek riser and LOP.
The savage website says it has a 1:13 twist barrel and a "palma 95 chamber". As a begginer at this, should I just start out with the F-TR and save a bunch of re-loading nightmares for a specialized chamber? How specialized is this chamber? Is it just tighter specs, aka a match chamber?
And yes, I do re-load and I already own a safe full of rifles but I've never needed anything greater than "minute-of-elk" accuraccy if you get my meaning. This rifle would be purely for bench off bags or a bid-pod and distances up to 500-600 yards initially and my goal is to reach 1000 with some sort of accurracy buy next fall.

I appreciate any and all answers, and it sure is nice to find a site like this!

I read somewhere that the Palma 95 chamber was designed for the Sierra 155gr MK. The throat is too short for any longer bullets like the Scenar. The other guys will pipe in, but I think that chamber won't pass the Bisley 150 rule.

308 hunting gun reamer throats are .3095 to .310

308 match reamer throat is .3085 different neck diameters
for those who want to neck turn their cases.

308 95 Palma throat is .3085 with throat cut for 155 grain Sierras

308 Bisley throat is .3085 the throat is cut to meet the
Bisley rule.

each has its place. The basic difference in a hunting reamer and a match reamer is in the throat and or neck. There may be some subtle differences in the web. Match chambers are generally tighter than hunting chambers due to the need to be able to shoot a variety of ammo makes and bullet lengths in hunting applications

mjohn7,
Please elaborate on the Sierra 155 would the Palma 95 be restricted to the #2155 old version or both the old and the new #2156 Sierra? Thanks

As per Sierra Oct 2008 Re the #2156 155 Gr.
The ogive is well back on this bullet, and will probably jump quite a bit at max length in longer than a ’standard’ Palma 95/WTC 95 chamber. Some, notably Warner Tool and Wayne Forshee, are working on reamer designs. For now, an existing, ’short throat’, Palma 95 chamber that seats the old Sierra at approx. 2.780″ to touch the lands should work fine.”

R2800, I had the same chamber in my 308 with a 1:14 twist barrel, I used the old 155 and 168 bullets and the results were good, I always fed through the magazine and never felt any issues with this chamber.

R2800, The Palma Match in 1992 was the first to use the Sierra 2155 and was loaded to an OAL of 2.80". The bullet was then adopted for the next Palma and so the Palma 95 reamer was created. At an OAL of 2.80 you may run into pressure problems when trying to get to the higher velocities. The pressure is reduced when the throat is modified to give more jump and the rounds are made longer. This may pose a problem with mag fed rifles but not with the single shot rifle you are proposing. By giving you the Palma 95 profile, you will have the option to shoot pre loaded ammo or to modify the chamber to shoot handloaded ammo. I have shot lots with the modified chambers and have not noticed any loss of accuracy.
