I know this topic was beat to death on the old CGN, but now all gone. I've finally got all my gear together to load precision .308, wondering if there's a consensus (HAH!) on a powder. I know Varget's popular... So far the gun seems to like 168gr (cp to 175gr) HPBT Sierras in Federal match, and these seem to fly better than 168gr Norma match (same bullet), but these are the only two "match" loads I've shot with it yet. Tho I haven't chrony'd them yet, the federal seems to be a heavier, more consistent load than the Norma. (meaning I shoot sub-moa consistently with the Federal, the Norma shoots low and the groups seem a little more open.) Also, while I think of it, best primer choice here? I've moved to Winchester primers in my pistols (from CCI) due to better burn, but find them a little soft in reloaded primer pockets (altho no blowouts evident).

I've had good results with 46 Varget, WIN or Lapua cases, Fed GM primers with plain Sierra - Nosler - Hornady 155s. If moly plated, a bit more powder. Velocities run about 2950, to 3050 (moly'd A-Max) out of 29 & 30 inch barrels.

Varget, temp insensitive, good velocity and works in 99% of 308s, in fact if it doesn't work gun probably needs help. Next in line would be RL-15, also temp insensitve and clean burning, IMR-4064 but not temp insensitive, used to be standard all other 308 powders where judged by. Used to use 4064 but here is Sask. it gets very hot in summer and noticed loads that were good in the spring showed pressure signs on hot summer days, tried Varget and have never looked back.

IMR4064. And weigh every charge. Loading match grade ammo requires much more care than regular ammo. All cases must be the same length and otherwise totally uniform. Primers at the same depth, etc.

168 sierra match and 39grs of H4895 if your gun has a 1in12 twist it will be a tacker. if your budget is okay get yourself some Lost River match 165 there the best about 30 us dollars for 20

all I use is Ball C2, love it, it pefectly duplicates Federal Gold Medal Match performance.

I've loaded it (BLC2) with 165 gr Hornady Interbonds for my Tikka 595. 3 shots into 1/2 inch @100m and opens up to 1.25 inches for 5 shots. The same rifle will shoot 5 shot groups with Fed 168gr GM Match of 1.5 inches @100m off of a Bench Master rest. I carry the Fed GMM in case I spot a song-dog while hunting, and I get it for free too 8)
