I am trying to settle down my groupings on a .308. In the past my dad had loaded I believe 47.0gr IMR4350 with 165gr Nosler Part bullets. This gun a 1970-71 Browning BLR .308. The groups were tight and consistant over many years. After having the gun passed on to me I was looking at the load data and asking questions. At the time I was told that the IMR4350 powder is not a good powder for this caliber. So I did some asking and all people pointed towards IMR4895. I did the switch and have had nothing but trouble trying to get any type of tight groups. I work up loads in summer and in fall. I have target shot the gun in summer and fall, and it is very inconsistant. I was advised to use H4895 powder as it is less sensitive to temp changes. I have not found any data for H4350 powder for the .308. I look at the Nosler#6 manual and they tested IMR4350 and the 47.0gr load would be a compressed load.

My question is what powder is a good fit for the .308 Browning BLR and 165gr bullets for use with temp ranging from +35 to -20 deg celcius?

My go-to load for that weight of bullet in .308 would be about 46 gr of Varget (in civilian brass).

As always, start a few grains low and work up to prove safe pressures.

IMR 4320
45.8grns
150 Hornady SP I/L
2700 fps.
Seem to work in the Ruger and
my daughter's Stevens.

I am assuming you are up in the Kamloops are. How do you find the IMR4320 in the wide ranges of temps. I live in the kootenays and am finding that the IMR4895 seems too temp sensitive to me. It just does not want to settle down at all.

Here's another vote for Reloder 15. I use it in the 308 and it's cousin, the 300 Savage.
Terrific results in both.
W748 should not be overlooked either.
Eagleye.

I only use the IMR 4350 and the IMR 4320.
Both have performed well for me and my daughter.

I have the same rifle and 45gr of Varget with 150 gr Hornady BTSP shoots 1" 3 bullet group @ 200 yards, 165 Hornady BTSP with 45 gr does the same think but @ 100 yards (I didn't try it yet @ 200).

I have also found 45gr of varget under a 150gr BTSP (Speer or Hornady) at 2.8" OAL was very accurate out of my Savage model 11 and is downright unbelieveably accurate in my Howa 20" heavy barrel.

I have had great success with H4895, BR 2 primer and 165/8 grain bullets. Try 41.5 - 42.5 grains H4895. That is the sweet spot with that round. Work up whatever you do.

IMR 4895 is very temp sensitive, one of the most sensitive there is for 308.
