What are you guys using for reloading 308? I haven't reloaded rifle yet just pistol and am not sure what everyone is using. Yes, I did read the reloading manual just looking for powder opinions.
in order of preference, I have used ( 165- 168 gran bullets) Varget, W748, RL15, IMR4064, IMR 3031. Other powders work well too, it is not a fussy cartridge to load for.
Used / using Varget, but going to try to develop some loads using IMR 4320 and Reloader 17.
I'm actually somewhat happy about trying new things in response to the shortages. I had good, but not spectacular results with Varget. I did like it's temperature stability though. Remained accurate from 0-24 degrees without touching or adjusting my load.
Still have a few pounds, but going to probably wait to use that this winter and develop summer loads with these other powders which are supposed to be "temp sensitive".
I have only used Varget and had such good results I have had no need to try anything else. The projectiles I have used with Varget were Lapua 155 gr, Berger 175 gr LRBT, Hornady 168 and 178 AMAX, and Sierra 175 MK.
RL15 for hunting, and target loads out of my 700V. I had been using RL15 out of my Nork M14 as well, but the consensus seems to be to go to H4895 as the RL15 could be problematic, especially as I want to shoot 175MKs out of the rifle (although I have yet to have any issues).
I just got BL-C(2) for reloading 150 gr bullets in my 308. I like the small grains. I have Unique for my pistol reloading and it is a larger grain.. I hate that. it crunches every time I load a cartridge. I'm a pistol loader too and I thought I "lubed" the casing enough... nope. I ended up getting a Hornedy case lube. Before the once fired brass would not even go half way into the die... with the lube she slid right in. The difference was nuts. Just one pistol loader to another.. LUBE..
I've tried most of the medium burners in my Norinco M14. Kind of settled on 4064 and 150gr Hornady FMJ's. Only downside is it doesn't meter as well as short grained or ball powders. Also use it in 3006, 8x57, 6.5x55 and a couple other military calibers so I always have at least a couple lbs available.
