If you want to use the crimp, then crimp in the cannelure and shoot them. There is no difference in bullets made for .30 M1 (Garand) and .308 Winchester.
If you want to optimize the bullet and barrel fit, then you probably don't want to crimp and you ignore the cannelure.

Other than for pistol or straight cartridges, in which case a small difference in seating depth can make a huge difference in pressure levels. Not the same for bottleneck rifle cartridges.
