Good days folks. Just baught a remmy 700 sps tac with a 20" barrel in .308.
Did some looking around in the forum for a thread but couldnt find one.
Just wanted to know what you guys found worked for you for loads so i can get a idea to start from. I've been reloading in .224 to get comfortable with reloading. using an RCBS Rockchucker start up kit.

Its target shooting that im doin. Just asking what you found worked for you. So what bullets you used, powders ect. Just looking for what worked for you. You at CFB Wainwright or just live in wain? Im in lloyd lol.
 
I just work in Wainwright week on week off but live in Meadow Lake, SK so I go through Lloyd once a week

I've been using 175gr SMK, Lapua brass, CCI BR2 primers, and 42-43gr of RL-15, 2.800" OAL. I still haven't nailed down a load yet.
 
Try BLC-2 with 175 SMKS, in Lapua brass with a CCI BR2 primer, a friend of mine found this combo works really well in his Rem 700 LTR.

I couldn't tell you the powder charge.
 
I'm using Nosler Custom Competition HPBT 175gr bullets, 41.5gr of IMR 4064 powder, Winchester brass, and Winchester Large Rifle primers. Forget the OAL. I suck too much to tell you if it's a good load, but it works for me and puts holes in what I want it to.

Honestly though, there need to be variety packs. Maybe enough for 10 cartridges, of a handful of different types of everything so you can try it out.
 
sierra match 168gr, hornady match 168gr, regular federal large primer, any decent .308 brass , 2.8 oal, start at 39.5gr of varget and go up to 43.5... anything in that range will shoot damn good in any .308.
 
Nothing revolutionary here... this recipe is straight off the Hogdon site... but it works wonders in our .308's;

165 GR. Hornady SST
Winchester brass
Hodgdon Varget powder (our favorite .308 powder)
.308" with COL = 2.750"
46.0 grains for 2773fps (we get 2800 fps with this loading) 50,500 CUP

We started testing at 42 grains and worked up from there... it got better and better as we uploaded.
 
Lapua brass through Peter at Hirsch Precision, and SMKs and Norma (I think) through Jerry at Mystic. Both are first class people to deal with.

FWIW, I use Varget with everything from Sierra 2155s to Berger 200 Hybrids, with Lapua Brass and CCI BR2s.

A bunch of brass that is from the same maker and ammo box or new bag.

I'd try the loads in your manual or Hodgdons website and go from there. Same process as your .223 just different/bigger components.
 
Varget is your friend!

I sold a Savage .308 and recently picked up a Howa 20" varmint off CGN (similar to your rifle).

My first outing I tried 3 loads, all with FL sized Fed brass (I normally just neck size but this was fired in a different chamber), CCI200 primers, all bullets seated to 2.8" OAL. I only tried one three shot group for each as I didnt have much time.

1) 170gr Lapua 'D46' bullet - 0.8" group
2) 150gr Speer BT 44gr Varget - 0.66" group
3) 150gr Speer BT 45 gr Varget - 0.35" group.

I have found 45gr Varget under 150gr bullets in a .308 to be typically a very good combo. Its right in the middle of the load range (most data for 150's is normally 43-47gr but check your manuals) but from my last 22" barrel it still gave right on 2800fps (haven't chronoed the 20" barrel yet).

Varget meters well, is very temp INsensitive, is easy to ID with its greenish colour and is very well suited to the .308.
 
I have been researching .308 loads for a week now, as i'll be jumping into .308 next as well, and it seems the new go to bullet for everything from 100 yards to 1000 yards is the Sierra 155 gn hpbt palma. And i will get a batch of them to find out.... Originally i was going to go with Hornady 178 gn BTHP, but then i'd need a bullet for 100-400 ish yards as well.... It seems with the Palma thats not necessary. And as i'll be using a scope that has advanced BDC, one load will be a good thing.
