.308 Savage 99E for Moose?

someone mentioned using a model 99 in fair weather, do they have any trouble with snow and rain? I have been considering a model 99 for my first moose kill.

its a perfect moose rifle, i have a 1956 savage 99 (rotary mag) .308 win that my grandfather gave to me. he used it for about 30 years, took over 20 moose and countless deer. for moose he prefered 150-180gr LSP ammo. for lots of deer and 1 moose he used 110gr LSP ammo. verry reliable rifle, and a great shooter the only part that has ever broke was the stock at the wrist. replaced the wole stock for $40.

I think it's more of case of guys wanting to protect their 99's.I've had no ,problems with mine in cold or wet weather. That being said I have one that I keep as a fair weather rifle.lol

I tried 180's in mine, but they wouldn't shoot out of my Savage 99C. Went with 165 Hornady interlocks. They shot well, gave extended range, and killed moose.

yet all mine has seen are 180 grain speer hotcors- and it's a 99c as well- 71-72 vintage
of course, you work the lever like you mean it, not pussyfoot closing the bolt

Moose are "pussycats"...you don't need a canon to bring them down...and if you are in the bush there will be no 600 yd shots...any factory ammo in this caliber will have you eating Moose steaks...

I never had an issue with chambering anything in the 99, just would not shoot 180 grains accurately.
I also found if I stayed back a bit from Max it shot better.
Alas, I sold it. Someday maybe I'll have another.

That's all my uncles ever used to shoot moose, or anything else for that matter, 180gr CIL's usually, for many years. Let's just say no one ever came close to starving, we were all well fed with wild meat. Still got one of those 308's, good guns. Couple of the cousins won many a "target shootoff" and mucho booty with them as well.
