OK, I admittedly do not know much about scopes, nor have I owned many, but have a budget of up to around $400 for a NEW scope to put on my Winchester 88.General hunting, deer, moose, all terrains: west coast bush to northern whatever.I'm looking at the Leupold VXII 3x9x40* Suggestions?:confused:Informed opinions? Thanks.

I two Burris Fullfeild II scope with ballistic-plex. 3-9x40 and a 4.5-14x42

I think they are just great!!! for the price.

Plus the ballistic-plex is pretty accurate out to 400 yards with a 150 grain bullet.

Honestly, I think the best scope for mixed bush/open range on a .308 would be the VXII 2-7x33mm. If you need more scope than 7x, get closer.;) and the 2x would be better in the tight bush. A fixed 4x would work well too.

I have 3 .308's in my cabinet, and the 3 scopes are Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x36, Leupold M8 fixed 4x, and an Bushnell Elite 2-7x32.

One more vote for a VX-II 2-7x. I've always found a good 2-7x scope to be ideal for 99% of my hunting needs. Having just 2x magnification on the low end works great for a fast jump shot, while 7x on the high end is plenty for anything out to 300 yards. As has already been said, if 7x isn't enough, you're too far away...

I like the Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10 x 40mm Riflescope with Rainguard. I Think they sell for around $430 plus tx. Even the 3200 is a good scope and cost about $225. I have had nothing but good service from them also. I returned an old Trophy scope that was over 10 yrs old to them and they sent me a new elite model for free. I also sent back a beat up pair of Bino's that were pretty old, and they replaced them with new ones.

Here's another vote for a Leupold VXII 2X7. I think that would be an ideal scope on a hunting 308 that will be used in a variety of conditions.

Nikin Monarch 3-9x40 is what I use! The Leupold you are looking at will be more than adequate for light transmission, lens clarity, and magnification for your hunting purposes! When I compare scopes, I first compare clarity and light transmission, magnification is determined by what the scope will be used for, and lastly, the price, which is usually the deciding factor in any of my decisions!

The 1.75-6X, 2-7X, and the 2.5-8X are all fine scopes. In all honesty there is nothing wrong with the 3-9X, I just think it's a bit bigger than what is needed on a hunting rifle. Given their Canadian warrenty center, their product line and price, Leupold is the top choice.

I'd go with a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 with ballistic plex because I think its the best scope for the money. Otherwise, a similar scope for twice the money from Leupold.

Thanks guys. You've given me some more to think about, but I'm better informed than before. Does anyone know what the Canadian warranty coverage is on the Burris scopes, and if there's any dealers on Vancouver Island?

I'm going to reccomend the biggest scope anyone here has said but I will follow up with some reasoning.

go a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x50mm with firefly recticle

heres why:

1.) 50mm objective lens gathers more light for better low light performance i.e. Dush/Dawn and heavy cover
2.) FireFly recticle again making shots in low ligh conditions easier

most shots are made in lower light conditions I know every Deer I have shot as been at Dusk or Dawn where its hard to see the crosshairs against a dark animal.

On a 308 for general all-around use, you'd be hard pressed to get a better scope than a Leupold 4X. 99.9% of shooters don't use the variable feature on their variables other than at the range when sighting in.

Not sure where you pulled that number from, but I have hunted deer for over 20yrs and have always used a variable, and change my power setting many times during a hunt depending where I am hunting and in what conditions. Out of the 6 guys I hunt with, only one of them uses a fixed scope. I also like the 1.5 x 10 from bushnell. Its great when you in the thick crap, and awesome when you hunting an open field. If you hunt the same exact spot all the time, or the same one tree stand, then sure a fixed power is great, but if your enviroment changes from heavy cover to open areas or day and late afternoon hunts, then a variable is great. Being able to zoom in on an animal is a great feature, especially when hunting in the last legal daylight.

Another vote for the Leupold VXII 2-7X. I have a couple of Bushnell Elites, both 3200 and 4200, and think they are great optics for the money. The Leupolds tend to be a bit smaller, lighter, and usually have better eye relief. The eye relief won't be much of an issue for a .308, but smaller and lighter is always good on a hunting rifle.

2-7x33mm leupold Euro-30. works nice on my .308 for the same hunting as you.
