Is there anything still available to us other than the browning bar, or that type of gun? I want a 308 semi. Whether it's a rifle or a receiver and I'll build a rifle. There must be something.

The B+T APC 308 or Tavor 7 are your only real options in a "tactical" style rifle. Some (like myself) cannot seem to fully tame the Tavor 7 due to its "different" recoil impulse. Accuracy with the Tavor 7 has also been disappointing at approximately 4 MOA. The APC 308 on the other hand, is a fairly heavy self-loading DMR-style of rifle which is capable of <1.5 MOA accuracy.

There is unfortunately no AR10 style of solution still legal in Canada which offers an ideal compromise between weight and accuracy.

I didn't know about the apc 308, but at $6000 I don't think I'll have one. The tavor isn't really for me, I'm just not into bullpups at all. I guess I can stop looking then. Thanks for the reply

There are a few Famae SG542 available. Currently there are two of them on #######. However they are a spendy option ... although a very nice option, but one that is really not "optics ready".

A friend has a SG542 and we shot it last week. Worked well and clanged every plate we aimed it at. :)

What distance were you shooting at? Genuinely curious, as both 542s that I owned would not shoot under 4 MOA with bulk ball ammo and 3 MOA with 168gr Federal Gold Medal Match. As a result I ditched them as the least accurate battle rifle that I have ever owned. This is why I never recommend the 542 in these .308 "tacticool" threads. Your experience obviously varies, which is why I ask. After all, engaging "minute of man" on a full-size IPSC steel at 100m is a very different challenge than a 2 MOA group on a 6" plate @ 200m. At the $5K prices people are demanding for a 542? I believe that you are far better off to save another $1K for a B+T APC 308....

We were just plinking a 1/2 size IPSC plate at about 100 yds and a full sized IPSC plate at about 120 yds. Mostly shooting offhand and a bit off a tripod. Didn't shoot any paper and didn't check out group sizes. For all I know that rifle could well be a 4 MOA rifle but it pinged the plates every time. Mostly I'm interested in it as a bear defence rifle in fairly thick forested area. It can output a large amount of hate and discontent into a small enough impact area within a short period of time.

Kel tech RFB is likely the cheaper most accurate choice today. It was a 1moa gun with premium hunting ammo for me with 3 round groups, opened up to 1.5moa after that.

It's different, but a much better rifle accuracy wise than the Tavor

Used RFBs go for ca. $3500 these days. There have been a few show up on #######.

Actually, they are optic ready,,,at least for the seventies.
Manurhin made a quick detach mount that was 1970s NATO STANAG.
Think eighties cold war with the bundeswehr G3 DMR style along with all those ZF 4x24 FERO scopes on a quick detach mount that lcoks on and off by push button. They also made the mounts for the SG540s as well as the Sg542s, they are differing sizes.
The SG540 mount also fits the swiss arms.

The 540/542 series was a lot of budget when they were only $2K.
The scopes when I bought them were around $450-550US and can now be found starting at $1K.
The price of the mounts has stayed pretty stable despite being only one source I ever found in France.
