Hi guys,

I am a new member to this board and was referred from a friend to come on here since I am new to hunting. I was wondering if I could get some input on a good 308 semi auto rifle for hunting. I know I am not giving very many details, but I have done some research and have decided to go with a 308 for its versatility and track record. Thanks for your help.

Ermmm...I'm starting to think we're conducting some chain pulling...
Seriously, to the OP, have a look in the forums/search function to see previous discussion...for a .308 semi, you cannot ignore the Norinco M305/M14S phenomenon, although you need to check if it's properly headspaced for .308 (it's a 7.62 gun).

Thanks for all your input so far. I will definitely be looking to purchase a used rifle as all of the 308 semi rifles have been quite expensive. Once I get into this a little more I am sure I will be buying new rifles but I thought I would start out with a second hand one first. Can anyone recommend a good gun shop that carries a good selection of used rifles in Ontario, keep in mind I live in Toronto. I often pass Elwood Epps on the way up to my cottage but haven't been in there for years.

Thanks again

You may want to look at a used Winchester model 100 -- they are very good guns -- accurate and are not overly heavy as some centerfire semis are. Thai being said, I do not have one for sale.
Cheers/luck, John

If you look around on the used market you can usually get some good deals within your budget, and have enough left over for accessories.

Lets see .....

Unreliable & prone to jamming. Aka: Remington Jam-O-Matic.

Quite heavy, harder to scope military type rifle. I owned one. Shot it ONCE and promptly sold it. Way better choices out there for hunting.

I don't own a 7400, so I'll take your word for it.
Yes, the M-14 is heavy, but a lot of semi's are. I don't know why you'd sell it after one shot. I wouldn't judge anything on one round, and I'm not just talking guns!:D
I've got mine doing about 1.5 inch groups @100yrds.

I should clarify that I took it to the range once and shot it a bunch of times that day. :)

I sold it cuz it was too heavy.
