308 semi

The 740/742/7400/750 Remington family is a love-'em-or-hate-'em bunch. I love them, personally. I like the fit, finish, style, balance, accuracy, and I have never had on jam on me, but my experience is limited to maybe a hundred shots from four rifles. Mind you, that could be a hundred deer....
I like the Browning as well. I know it's available in .308 Winchester, I don't know if the Benelli is.
I've fired just one Model 100. It was accurate and comfortable to shoot.

id agree the three main pics are remmington semi, (buyer beware the remmys never oil them when its cold). the norcs and the browning

have you considered levers? less jams and same speed. the browning blr or marlin xlr in 308.?

742 rem

okay this is from a guy who hunted for at least 15 yrs with a 308 742! have killed many moose and deer with it and never had it fail in the feild, however I have had it jam at the gun range, might have been related to my handloads as I have experimented a lot with it over the years. It was a minute of angle gun on a good day. A buddy of mine had the same gun in 30-06 and had nothing but problems, although it was under a miniute on a bad day. the 742 is not a very strong action and I feel the 308 cartridge is the limit for it. if I had to recommend a semi for hunting, bar none it would be a BAR {punny} the Browning is "no questions asked "the best most dependable semi made, end of story for all you model loyal guys. I own a BAR and it is no way as comfortable a gun as the Rem. so look for a BAR in 308, which will cost you,or if you find a 742 in 308 and it does not look to abused and is cheap{under $400} give it a try. The other thing to be aware of is for hunting a semi is a very VERY dangerous gun!! in the heat of the moment it is very easy to not put the safety on after taking a shot and that gun is always ready to KILL. Having owned and hunted with one for years I am very leary of being in the bush with someone who has one. so be very aware if you use one!!
my 2 cents :)

Third vote for win 100.
I owned a norc m14s and sold it because of how heavy it was too, wouldn't suggest it to anyone for a hunting rifle outside of maybe using it in a tree stand, but even then there's better choices.

The m14 may be a proven platform and although many have hunted with it, it is by no means a first choice hunting rig. Go to a range or a gun store and fondle as many different rifles as you can. Buy the one that fits you best. Like others have said, I dont know why you have pigeon holed yourself on a semi. If it is for fast follow up shots a pump is also pretty quick, followed by the lever. You just may like the way a BLR feels. But if its a semi you must have BAR all the way.
I am kind of a browning guy if you cant tell.

im gonna have to vote for the BAR too.

ive owned a 100 and found it fussy at times. steer away from M14 rifles for hunting(awsome rifle, ive got one, but it wouldnt be my first choice on a deer hunt), like everyone said, there are better options.

Browning BAR, but finding a used one in 308 is difficult. Used ones seem to be more common in 30-06. The Winchester 100 is also a very good rifle, and you can also take a look at the Winchester 88, same as the 100 but a lever action.

The HK 770 is very nice, but way out of your budget.

If you haven't been to Epps for a long time, you are going to be in for a surprise. Greatly expanded gun section in a new underground room, and they have definitely become one of the better gun stores around southern Ontario

Fourth vote for Model 100 Winchester....
I have one...has never failed me....one piece of advice before purchasing...There was a firing pin recall on these back in 1990-1991 for all of them...free replacement from Olin Winchester, plus a 30.00 US check to help defray the gunsmith cost to replace....one quick call to a 1 800 number will tell you (serial number needed) if the one you are considering has been done...if it has not, you may get it cheaper even...

To start off, I'm no great fan of semi's for hunting in general, I just don't see the need, however, each to his own, here's my experience for what it's worth.
I'd avoid the Remington semis in general. There are good ones, but there are also a lot of Jam-O-matics. The rifle itself is a delight to hold, light, fast, and accurate.
But if you value reliability, it's probably not the rifle for you, at least that's been my experience with several of these rifles.
Winchester's 100 is comparably light, and far more reliable, Browning's BLR is heavier, but also reliable.
I've no experience with the latest semis, so no comment.

Yup. A nice used Belgium made Browning is a great choice. I'd also consider .270 and
.30-06 chamberings (Even 7mm Rem mag and .300 Win mags. Semis soften recoil quite a bit.).

If you don't mind the weight the Norinco M-14 is low recoil, accurate and very reliable. The 7400 gets a bad rap because most owners don't maintain them properly. They are accurate for 3 quick shots then the barrel heats up. If you can't hit what you are shooting at after 2 then practice more.

my $0.02

remingtom make the 308 as a semi or a pump action (7400 & 7600). Basicaly the same rifle with two ways of opening the bolt.

The pump has a free floating barrel and is usually more accurate than a bolt action rifle and almost always much more accurate than the semi auto version.

I have both and much prefer the pump.

If you are shopping for a used, don't be shy about buying a 30-06 if you see a deal. Almost the same as a 308.

You have got to be kidding a pump action Rem is more accurate than a bolt action oh my God!! Anyway As for the Rem 740-742 they have the nine recoil lug locking system after extensive use the receiver would develop chatter marks on the slide rails which would cause binding and malfunctions they are now 40-50 yrs old STAY AWAY. as far as Browning copying Bennelle Browning developed the first Semi Auto's lets keep this realistic . As far as for me I did Remington's ,Winchesters , and Brownings , Warranty work for years I have a fairly knowledgeable back ground on these 3 manufactures .Thanks .
