While I was picking up some brass at the shooting range I found a case I thought was a 38-55 or something similar.
Turns out it was .308 that must have been fireformed to a staight wall. What would be this used in?

308 fired out of a 30-06
+1

I've found straight wall 308 cases several times at the range. Always just before hunting season too when someone buys the wrong box of ammo. Once watched three guys struggle for about an hour trying to figure out why a BAR wasn't working properly. They finally figured out that they where using 308 Win ammo in a 30-06 rifle and it wouldn't cycle or fire reliably (cartridge was falling into the chamber where the firing pin couldn't reach it). I've also watched guys struggle to try to chamber a 30-06 round into a 8x57mm Mauser (shoulder is too far forward on a 30-06 and it wont fit). They assumed their Mauser with non-English markings was a 1903 Springfield for some reason.

I've seen guys shoot 7x57mm in an 8x57mm rifle.
17HMR in a 22WMR
22lr in a 22WMR

Some people really need to go back and review standard firearms safety.

The .38-55 is rimmed. A .444 Marlin looks a lot like a stRaight walled .308. Rim's a bit bigger though. A .308 fired out of a .30-06 usually has a tiny bit of neck left. Any head stamp?

It's also not impossible that it could have been someone's attempt at making a 45 Raptor. http://www.45raptor.com/45RAPTOR/

Essentially a straight walled .308 Win case with a .460 S&W bullet in it.

Probably just a .308Win shot through a 30-06 though, not many people have even heard of 45 Raptor and those that have are unlikely to leave the brass behind.

did they look like this?

If it's full length, then I'll have to go with everybody else and say .308 fired out of a 30-06. If it has been shortened, it is possible that it's from a .44 Automag. If my memory serves me correctly, the .44 Automag rounds could be made from cut-down .308

I vaguely recall reading that when the military developed the .308 (actually it was the 7.62 x 51), they designed it so that nothing really bad would happen if you fired it in a gun chambered for 30-06......

I did look like the 308 (head space maximus) fired in a 30-06 . It was the full length of a 308 with the roll on the end.

Actually the original 7.62 Nato was designed, at the request of the US military, to chamber and "wedge" headspace in the 30 caliber cartridge of 1906 chamber. They had quite a stockpile of 30-06 rifles and wanted to be able to fire the new cartridge safely from an 06. If you notice the shoulder dia of the 308/7.62 it is slightly larger than the corresponding dia at the same body length on the 30-06. This does assume though that chambers are cut to the proper dimensions and factories make their cartridges to proper dimensions, both of which we all know to have significant variances.
In most cases though you can safely and even somewhat accurately fire 308 in '06 chambers..............were I in a war zone scenario and had my trusty '06 and only 7.62 ammo was available, you can be assured my rifle would not be silent.
