.308 steel cased in Norinco M14

When I first got a 305 I shot a few hundred brass and then mostly steel case.
It now has about 2000 rounds through with no problems at all.

Had some cases measured recently (Thanks Hungry!!)

Cases from the long barrel at about the 1000 round count (800 steel case): 14, 12, 12 thou

Brand new CanAm shorty.
12, 12, 12 thou

shot shy of 100 rounds of these steel cased norinco rounds, and my bolt roller broke
it's been @ m14doctor, but I don't think it was due to the ammo

MFS works great in mine, fairly clean but the red stuff around the primers turns my white grease to pink.
I won't talk about accuracy, turns out my scope was slowly going south.

The Norinco copper washed steel case (Can Am) wasn't cycling too well in either of mine, short strokes. Seems to have a lot of carbon residue as well.
Someone suggested the stock spring might help so I put that back in my long barrel and still no go.
When I put the USGI spring and Sadlak guide in the shorty it seems to be cycling fine, I've only run about 30 rounds through it so far but I'm optimistic(fingers crossed).

Might all be my fault though, don't have the tools to properly clean the gas system yet. All I did was solvent soak and pick at it as best I could. A CRT-14 Carbon Removal Tool is in the mail from One Shot Tactical.

Works fine in mine, bought in 2000. My son and I were hitting the 300m gong with iron sights last week using the recent CanAm stuff.

Use MFS all the time. Zero issues so far except in one client's shorty ( not Chemo's ) . That shorty was very ammo sensative.

Steel cases are stronger than brass cases, if your rifle happened to have disasterously long headspace it would be safer to shoot it with steel cases than brass. Read up on the roller bounce issue of the MG42 if you want to see how dramatic the difference really is.

- Can you reload the steel cases?

It's possible but I wouldn't, boxer primed stuff is so much easier. You have to get your hand on a berdan primer popper (or a paperclip) and then buy the actual primers. In order to resize the case you'll need to drill out the casing so your decap rod will fit through, and I have no idea what steel cases will do to your dies. The other problem is rust, those casings I believe were meant to be 1x fire and throw away. Maybe the MFS stuff is better than the lacquered Czech surplus. Guys on the US forums have successfuly done this, simply to call out the people who say it's not possible but it took them a long time just to do 20 cartridges.

If I were to attempt this I'd try to find berdan primed brass cases, not steel.

Got back from the range 6 days ago, my computer' #### fell off (virus) so I'm posting now to say the steel cased Herter's .308 shot no problem and it was 9.99 a box! I also shot some American Eagle 168 gr. that produced the first problem with my Norinco, a failure to feed, and this stuff said "for M1A" on the box.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, as it had been a couple of months since I first decided to get a Norinco short rifle and finally bit the bullet (figuratively speaking) when I saw Canada Ammo's deal for a shorty with 520 rounds of Norc ammo for $599. I was unsure about whether to get one or two cases of the ammo at the $.50 per round price to feed my Norcs, but could hardly pass it up at $.33 per round!

If accuracy is good, I'll consider using it for Service Rifle (which I'd like to take up this summer), but I was also thinking of getting into CQB and thought that the Norc shorty would be an interesting alternative to the CZ or AR clone.

If we could consistently get 7.62 in the $.33 per round price, I think we'd see M14 clones outpacing SKSs in terms of popularity and sales.
