Hey guys, Im new and trying to figure out a few things about making a 308 to a 7-08. Ive read/heard some concerns that neck size may be a issue. If making a generic (if there is such a thing) 308 to 7-08 conversion would there be a neck size standard? or max? if so please pass on what size I would not want to go over. Currently I do not have a 7-08 rifle but oh do I have a whole lot of brass and Im kinda bored ;-) Thanks

What do you mean neck size? If you run it through a 7-08 die, the outside diameter will be correct. Do you mean neck thickness?

I suppose I mean thickness but Im not sure, I had a guy tell me today that the neck size would change and it may not chamber properly or at all....He said when converting the "brass has to go somewhere" I suppose he meant thickness?? He really wasnt the most helpful so I left it at that and came and asked here

I lube as per usual just run the 308 cases into my 7-08 full length die that is set up with a fair amount of cam over on the press. They come out a bit short on the trim length so I just square them up and load as 7-08. Depending on the brass you may encounter issues with the neck thickness and they may require outside neck turning, best way to know is to measure a fired factory case from your chamber, if a loaded round made up of converted brass with a bullet seated in it measures at a smaller diameter at the neck then you are good to go, if it is larger then neck turning may be required. Just because the new case will chamber doesn't mean that the neck will have the proper clearance once a bullet is seated, and during firing
