Looking through my stash, I have 2 powders that seem to be most ideally suited to the .308 - Varget & 4064.

I'm planning on shooting 165/168's mostly, out of a 22" barrel.

Which of the two would you think is most suitable?

Varget works great near Max loads!!!

4064 is also very good but I have found it to act funny in the hotter seasons..YMMV

use both and experiment.reload 10 of each with different amounts of powder.go to range and shoot out of rifle you want to use at the range you intend to do your shooting .remember different rifles like different rounds .some combinations work excellent in one and are horrible in others.your only limit time and availability to try your creations.record keeping is essential!!!!!!myself i shoot weekly for relaxation /and what killed the cat.LOL!
what works best in my win 88.doesn't work as good in my bsa......22in barrell vs.a24in barrel

have used both

with 168 and 175 SMK's
Had great accuracy results with both but Varget won out as less deviations with temperature.

I have used both. IMR4064 works well but I got really good results with Varget, but you have to stuff that powder in there if you're going near max load.

Varget fills the 308 case without over compression. Nice powder. However, your gun will tell you if it likes Varget.

I had similar dilema and run test using 4 powders.
Re15-Varget-N550-IMR4064

IMR4064 outperformed others with 175gr SMK and 180SMK, only lacking to Varget in 155Palma,
however second was Re15. I gave up 4064 due to larger powder size and Re15 was easier to load with 175gr SMK using 42.5gr.
Then I decided to run 175gr at around 2800fps, at higher velocities Varget came a winner.
Still best 5 shot group comes from Re15 - 0.365", IMR4064 was consistent at 0.4-0.6", excellent powder.

My favorite .308 load for my Browning A-Bolt micro medallion (20" barrel) is 45.5 of Varget and a 165 Nosler Partition. It will produce consistent 5/8" to 3/4" 3 shot groups at 100 yards, and 2850 fps. I call it my "Dreamload". This load was built w/ Imperial brass and CCI std. primers.

308

They are both good, i used 4064 for years and was very happy with speed and accuracy but i have a friend who uses H4895 with 150gr BT and loves it, he gets fantastic accuracy and good velocity.

My buddy ran into trouble with his precision rifle using RL-15 after Varget,it seems Varget's coatings leave a fouling that RL-15 reacts to,badly. The biggest knock on the IMR 4064 is metering,it's either one of the new electronic ones or the Lee Perfect.

Denton ran tests with regard to temperature,in a 308 case ,IMR 4064 is ok.But what he found was that chamber temperature has the biggest effect. Both RL-15 and Varget have a higher tolerance.

There are good lots and not so good lots of powder.
