308 vs 30-06

There is no doubt the 30-06 does have a velocity advantage, which makes it harder hitting and flatter shooting than the 308 win. However, I doubt the game will be able to tell the difference....dead is dead. :)
 
The difference becomes more apparent has bullet weight goes up. My take on matter, if you are going to use bullets over 180 grains exclusively, go 30/06. Under 180 grains, 308 Win. 180's only? Toss a coin. Lol!
 
One thing I have been wondering is,.. why do most 308win have a 1in12 twist rate,..and most 30-06's have a 1in10 twist rate,...they both throw a 30cal bullet at almost the same velocity,...is the 1in10 in the '06 because of throwing/stabilizing heavier bullets?

Also,...I know where there is a Belgium made BAR in 308 that is pretty much mint condition for under $700,.....should I buy it? :p

I have both. 308 has shorter bolt throw and 30-06 can accommodate heavier bullets but, really, dead is dead. If you are taking on the largest of game then perhaps the consideration out to include the .300 win mag.

Where in your OP did you say anything about factory ammunition?

Neither one is worth a pinch of coon sh!t compared to the 300 WM or Wby..........now these are real hunting cartridges.
Is it really necessary to relive this debate every 90 days as new members join and want to create, what they believe to be, the ultimate question??????
In all reality both cartridges were designed for killing homo sapiens from semi and fully automatic weapons...........do they hunt well? Not bad but there are better cartridges which were designed solely for the hunting of medium and big game animals. Neither one exhibits any particular advantage over the other in the game fields, however the 30-06 does arrive with more energy and velocity on target making it a marginally better cartridge with which to take game. To say there is no difference is to ignore the facts, of course there is a difference, and it lays in the neighborhood of 100-250 fps. Does this make the 30-06 a better cartridge choice when hunting big game?..........Of course it does, it goes without saying.......can I do anything in a hunting situation with a 30-06 that cannot be done with a 308?..........Hard to say, cause I wouldn't hunt big game with either one of them, truth be told, and as long as there are better choices in my rack and ammo in my safe for them, I won't have to. But if it came down to only choosing between the '06 and 308, I'd run the '06 until I was out of ammo for it and only then would I take a 308 into the game fields..........JMHO

Oh ya and I have several of both and many, many better suited cartridges in my vault...........

OP, you really should go back and research the design criteria of the 7.62 NATO (308 Win), shooting game didn't even factor into the equation, neither did it when the 30-06 was designed and adopted either.

As others have said the 30-06 starts to outshine the 308 as the bullets get heavier.

I personally use 308 for everything up to moose. I load a 130ttsx to 3180fps out of a finnlight and it shoots great and is accurate & flat shooting enough for me at the distances I would shoot at game.

Before the .30-06, there was the .30-03. That cartridge had a 220gr. round nose bullet. It was big, heavy, and slow. Therefore it needed the 1:10" twist to stabilise it. The .30-03 was not long to the world, being replaced by the .30-06. The 1903 rifles that were chambered for .30-03 were re-chambered for the newer cartridge, but the twist rate stayed the same, at 1:10".

it would be great if you quit drinking ...lol..factory ammo for the 30-06 does not get up to 200 fps over the 308..and I never asked about shooting coons in chit ..now move on ...lol

to be honest with you many 30-06 rifles will run 100 fps slower than factory ammo specs ..in other words there is more of a diff in velocity from a 30-06 rifle to rifle than 308 to 30-06 in factory ammo ..sorry all you 6's ..and the 30-06 claim to fame is from the majority of hunting over the last what , 100 yrs , based on factory ammo ..

How does the design criteria factor into the suitability for big game i say nowhere. Its just a silly conceit to say its suitable for this or that because of design intent when its been around so long.
 
Just ordered my 60th 308 today and waiting on my second 30-06 a JRA Garand M1, i am definetly biased... JP.
