;)I was trying to come up with some cheeky smart reply but nothings coming through. Thanks for the opportunity to purchase it Hoyt, much appreciated:d:d. I'll try and put it to use on our Island Blacktail next season.

Ahhhh... post a picture, posed with a nice blacktail buck and we'll call it square... ;)

Good thread, some really good points made. I was in the same boat trying to deside, but ended up keeping the 308 and selling the 30.06.
Mostly because I prefer not to have too many calibers. ( 12ga, 308, 5.56, 22lr and 9mm is all I need. )

These threads are always entertaining. I have chronied factory .30-06 180 grainers at just a hair over 2700 fps in some instances. I don't think a .308 will come close to that with 180 grain bullets. I think that is where the -06 earns its keep - with heavy bullets.

I can push 180gr to 2800fps in my 30-06 22" barrel.

I have heard it stated that the 30-06, in a modern rifle and with modern powders, can be be loaded to "magnum" levels. I agree with this.

I am a .308 guy through and through. I like the smaller more efficient case size, if I get 100-200 fps less I am fine with that as I am also getting less recoil and not wasting powder trying to get that extra little edge in speed. However I can not deny the edge the 30-06 holds with heavier projectiles and when loaded to maximum levels.

don't really care what you can push... the thread is about the success and accomplishments of the 30-06 while using factory ammo .. Not sure whats so difficult to accept and comprehend...The 308 on the same table is every bit as good and better with the short action...Good grief give it up already you and a few ...30-06 should be put to bed

The 30-06 is a steer with factory ammo that most owners use ....

You already formed your very own little personal opinion before starting this thread, so why start it in the first place ??
Its too bad the 30-06 is such a poor factory cartridge isn't it, but year after year it puts a lot of meat in hunter's freezers, hunters that are very happy with the old champs performance... LOL..

The 30-06 is very often the recommended choice for all north America big game hunting applications . The most common bullet weight used is the 150 , 165 and 180 .

With this bullet range what does the 30-06 bring to the party that a 308 win doesn't ? Thinking of the new bullet designs , the average extra 100 fps from the 30-06 really doesn't mean anything . So is it fair to say the 308 is on par with anything the 30-06 can do ?

I think the problem here is that you don't know the difference between a "bullet" and "ammunition." Where in your opening post did you say anything about "factory ammo?"

I'm done with your trolling...

words keep coming out of your mouth like diarrhea ..... but you have nothing to back them up with ......

firstly where is your data that 308 factory ammo is the same or better velocity than 30-06 ammo that you are claiming ?

secondly , where is your data proving that factory 3006 ammo is what most owners use .......

your posts are a meaningless drivel of baseless numbers

At 100 yards used on Deer sized game, both cartridges loaded by a factory in the same product line...150-180 gr equals dead deer. Since that covers most hunting in Canada...no difference. Not

Now go after something larger than Deer, using 2 weeks of your holidays, thousands of dollars in trip expenses, with a rifle that costs the same in 30-06 as 308, same optic, same taxes.

Why not use the better cartridge, with the better terminal performance, at longer ranges? The whole short action argument is silly.....if 2-6 oz of weight makes a difference....take up a different passtime....or go to the gym.
