The .30-06 is generally thought to have the edge with bullets heavier than 150 grs. Depending what kind of rifles you prefer, a short action .308 might be shorter, lighter, and handier than it's long action .30-06 counterpart. Personally I doubt if the game could tell by which round they were hit.
A lot depends on if you hand-load or not. In factory offerings there is not a lot of difference between the two cartridges. Hand loading for the 30-06 in a modern rifle does however give the edge to the larger capacity round, especially with heavier bullets. The 308 with 165 grain bullets pretty well maxes out at 2650 - 2700 fps. The 30-06 can safely propel those bullets at 2900+ fps, a gain of 75- 100 yards in extreme range, With 180 and heavier bullets the spread is even larger.

I have a few 30-06 chambered rifles and a couple in 308s and all of them are suitable for their intended uses! LoL

Both have their good points , the .308 may be a little more accurate but the 06 will have the advantage when heavy bullets are used. So find out which one you shoot the best and be happy with your selection. Or better still support your local gunnutz and buy one of each.....

difference is an additional 12mm length in the cartridge case.
any bullet that you can load in a .308, you can load in a .30/06, as a matter of fact .308 diameter bullets can be loaded in at least 10 different calibers. There are 60 plus different .308 diameter bullets available for reloaders.

Im a personal fan of the 308 over the 06. The 308 Winchester is about the most common caliber I've seen (out here) in all of the camps I've been to in deer season.

Personally, I'm OK with an '06 wth a stoutly-built 180 or 165 grain bullet (don't let anyone tell you they're not accurate). In a .308 I'd avoid heavier bullets in favour of a deep-penetrating bullet. In a .308 (for hunting) I'd go with a 165 grain Nosler Partition, Swift, Barnes or similar bullet for the same game. Come to think of it, the 165 is probably my favourite in both calibers.

For most hunting situations there is no real advantage 1 has over the other. Typically the 308 shoots 175 grain or less bullet weights very well, most do not shoot the heavier bullets very well. The 06 will typically shoot the heavier bullets better due to the larger case capacity and usually longer barrels.
The only times that the 06 would really show up as superior would be when wanting to shoot heavy (200 plus grain) bullets at longer ranges.

The .308 only needs a short action compared to a long action for the 30-06.
Short action rifles can be lighter, faster and more accurate in some cases than long action rifles.
The 30-06 has more velocity/energy due to more case capacity.... more jam with heavier bullets and at long range.
I hate them both... get a .270WSM.

For most Ontario hunting, the only difference (Other than heavy bullets) is that the '06 burns more powder.
These are both great cartridges! As has been noted, The '06 has a bit of an advantage in velocity, particularly when the heavier bullets are being used. Game, within most practical hunting distances, will not know the difference. I personally lean a bit to the '06, partly because I own a very accurate 24" barrelled 700SSDM so chambered. It is the most cosmopolitan rifle I have ever owned, shooting all weights of bullets accurately and to a similar point of impact. Very few are like that. A 200 grain Partition at 2650+ and shooting into about ½ moa is a force that cannot easily be denied. Secondly, the '06 is a fair bit more popular in our area than is the 308. Seriously, I doubt that anyone shooting 150/165 grain bullets would be able to detect a real-world difference in the two. Regards, Eagleye.
