.308 Vs .3006

Well as was mentioned, i think for all practical purposes and considering the bullets and loads available for hunting the difference is about 75 yards, maybe a bit less. What the 308 does, the 30-06 does about 50-75 yards later.

Additonally, if you wanted the horsepower anyway, hornady makes a 180 grain light mag load for the 308 that comes out at about 2750. That's almost bang on what a 'standard' 30-06 180 grain bullet will do.

Unless you go long once in a while, or are hunting really heavy game, i doubt there's a noticable difference.
 
I disagree Foxer, the real difference is closer to 150 yards with regard to speed, energy and trajectory in a 180 grain bullet!
Hornady also offers a light mag in 30-06....2900 fps!

You're right, of course, but my point was that with proper bullet selection the 308 will kill game and hit hard about 75 yards difference, if you know what i mean. And again - more or less. Definately the 30-06 will outperform with the heavier bullets - but with today's bullets do you need a heavier one to get the job done? Probably not if you pick well, even on big boys. The killing power of a 308 with the right load is probably only 75 ish yards difference than a 30-06, and trajectory on 165 grain bullets is around about that, depending.

I do like the 30-06 tho :)
 
I see what your saying... and your right the 30-06/308 debate is a redundant argument in most practical hunting situations.
I still hate them both..... get a 300WSM and live in the now!
 
Weatherby is old news Dustin... heavy recoil... seriously overbore... faggy english butler sounding name... I hate Weatherbys's.:p
The 300WSM is the best of both worlds... short action, low recoil and handles all bullet wieghts with better than 30-06 performance!:)

30-06 vs .308 debate

Each caliber has its own merits and when used within their limitations provides more than adequate velocity and energy to take most north American big game species. To say another caliber is better because of someone's personal preference is narrow minded and detracts from the sport. The new WSM cartridges are new and welcome to the shooting world and will likely find their place with many shooters because of its own merits not because someone perceives it as better than a cartridge thats been around for 100 years. :cool: If bigger is better then the .338 is better than any WSM caliber , right.?
 
federal high energy premium is also available in 308 and 30-06 etc
in 308 the 180 nosler partition is doing 2700+ f/s and should be adequate for most north american game
You can't go wrong with either caliber imho
 
I vote for the '06. It's a classic caliber, available everywhere and does the job just a little better than the .308.
 
for me i hear 308 and i think of long range target shooting i hear 3006 and i think of ultimate hunting rifle for north america as those are the experiances i have with the 2 calibres but froim my reserch i believe that they are both pretty much equal no matter how you look at it it will all come down to personal opinions for the real differences between then two
 
308 vs 30-06

No Question, I Shot 6 Deer This Season With My Rem 7400 ,all Of Our Camp (16) Guys Own A Rem 742 Or 7400 In This Cal. It Knocks Down Moose Just As Well( 3 Last Year.) The 308 Is A Machine Gun Cartridge For The Military, But Then The 30-06 Was A Military Cartridge . In Ontario They Come Buy Fast, Gotta Have A Semi To Win!!!!
 
I have several rifles that overlap in application, therefore I load each one different to make full use of their ballistic potential. If I want, I can reload them to the same specifications but it does not make sense to do that. The .308 is loaded with 165 grain Noslers for 2,700 fps. It covers the widest part of the hunting spectrum. My 30-06 is loaded with 220 grain Hornadys for 2,450 fps. It is a short range (to 150 yards) killing machine for bigger game. The 300 WM takes a 180 grain bullet at 3,000 fps and the 30-30 a 150 grain bullet at 2,100 fps. They compliment each other, they don't compete.
 
It is true... you watch a Weatherby owner closely... he will be slightly limp in the wrist, as a result of recoil or confused genetics is anyones guess... I'm serious this time:redface:
