308 vs 300mag

I think for your shooting pleasure it's better you go with a 308 caliber. The 300 magnum seems fun for first shots but after a while you will feel the recoil getting to you. Also you will get more barrel heat and wear from the 300 Mag.
 
I've had several thousand rounds of shooting pleasure from my 300.

Find someone who has one and shoot several rounds out of each. By several I mean at least a box. Then decide for yourself.
 
The only problem with humping your favourite "Tactical" rifle around hunting is that a 14lb rifle gets old fast. For that reason I'd suggest buying the 308 for playing and pick up a nice used 300 for moose hunting. Lots of guys still dumping their Old Magnums in favour of Short Magnums.
 
I have a tikka T3 lite stainless in .300WSM, and I love it. light, powerful, accurate, and I reload so the ammo price isnt as bad as it could be.
 
Max You may not be a wimp, chances are the rifle does not fit you well, which will tend to beat the #### out of a guy. Stock design and fit are BIG determinations of how much recoil is passed onto the shooter
 
BigUglyMan (six "opinions" up) you're too right. Ocassional hunting with a heavy barreled tactical rig like that is one thing, but I'm worn out carrying my Tikka Tactical up that damn hill at Burke Mountain (it's not even that big of a hill.) Scoped and with a bipod and the only hunting I'd be doing with it is out of the bed of a pickup or on a portable gun bench.

And just this morning out at the range I had the "pleasure" of being caught between a fellow with a .308 savage with a break and a guy goin nuts with his VZ (with unpinned mags) with a break. Anyone who says you have to be standing right at the muzzle to get rocked by the shock is nuts. I was wearing my molded ear plugs UNDER my electric earmuffs and had to go take a time out away from them.

Just to be devil's advocate here I'm actually waiting on a break for my .308 Tactical, and anyone know if I can put one on my 10FP Savage in .308? Alberta Tactical Rifle???
 
I would say you would feel a difference, probably more in the ability to not loose your sight picture on targets. I installed a Miculuck on my wifes 11.5" AR-15 by her request not thinking it would make a difference on a small caliber but to my suprise made a substantial difference. I can't tell you what reduction it would make in felt recoil and will leave that one to Rick or Mystic to answer.
 
If you want a tikka like at the starting of this post get a sako muzzle break I have one on my Tikka T3 tactical in .300 win mag and it is great.

Your T3 Tactical in 300 WM must be an earlier version. The Tactical only comes in 223 and 308 now. 300 WM is no longer available. http://www.berettausa.com/product/pr...ifles_main.htm

.308 will work for moose. It is more sensible to select a .308 when you are shooting 99% time off the bench and 1% moose. I would keep the .308 for the under 250 yard shoots.

Having said that .308 is not my first choice for moose. As I have both calibers, I will take my 300 WM. IMHO it will throw the 200 gr bullets with more authority.

Based on ballistics charts, a 180gr softie is only retaining 587 ft/lbs at 500 yards. Also, it drops 78" if you zero'd at 200 yards.

I shot a moose at close to 400, and that seemed like a f*cking loooong ways away!!

I hear you guys talking about shooting 1000 yards.....do you really shoot that far? Obviously not at moose at that range. At about 6 or 700 yards, the bullet would probably just bouce off him.

I'd hate to see the drop at 1000yards.

The 308 win will retain barrel life and accuracy far longer then a 300 win mag particularily loaded at peak chamber pressures. On a 308 mag, peak accuracy is around 500-1000 then it starts to drop off......

For big game the 300 win mag leaves the 308 behind especially at longer ranges.
